movingon
I have just begun to use the web version of BBO for ACBL tournaments. Unfortunately, the only sounds i hear now is a quiet beep now and then to indicate a new round has started. I have Vista. Is anyone else having the same problem? And does anyone know what to do about it (I like to hear when a new hand is up, when someone has bid, etc.)
Tola18
Same here. I do hear the fall of the cards, but not if someone speaks to me or such. Very irritating as I often surf while I have the BBO open. Sometimes even when I supposedly do kibitz.
fred
I made the sound effects in the web-client rather subtle on purpose (because of the many complaints I received over the years about the sound effects in the Windows client). Most likely at some point in the future we will review and possibly change this aspect of the web client. Perhaps we will even hire a professional sound effects person to help us. But this is not something that I consider to be a high priority right now (sorry). If more people complain perhaps the priority level will be bumped up. helene_t
No complaints from me, the sounds in the web client are adequate IMO. Obviously this is something that lends itself to customization.
movingon
I expect I will get used to the lack of sound as I use the web version more... But I do miss the sounds. It is easy to turn one's sound off on the computer, but it is not possible to turn sounds on that aren't there. :)
mink
I do hear a sound when it is my turn to play and when I receive a private chat. Maybe those who do not hear it should try a higher volume level? Karl
movingon
Playing on the web, I do not receive a sound when it is my turn to bid... I have my sound level on high...Actually, the lack of sound so discombobulates me that I went back to the old software...

I have my sound level on high...Actually, the lack of sound so discombobulates me that I went back to the old software... Sorry - I don't know why you are having this problem. There is supposed to be a sound when it is your turn to bid or play - it sounds like a single drumbeat. The web-client is also supposed to produce sounds when: - a card is played- a private chat message is received- claim/redeal/undo request is made- you receive a server-generated popup window (like a tournament invitation for example)- a tournament round change takes place None of these sounds are especially loud, but you should not have to turn up your volume above the normal setting to hear them. I have no idea why you (and probably others) are not hearing these sounds. I just tried the web-client on a variety of PCs and they all produced sounds at the appropriate times. I will see if I can figure it out. If I can I will fix this problem in the next version and make a post in this thread to let you know. If anyone else experiencing this problem has any insight into what might be happening, please let me know! Coelacanth
Fred, I've had a couple of issues with the sound on my Vista system when playing on the web client. I mainly play robot tournaments. Sometimes, as the "hey, it's your turn to play" sound is starting, I lose all sound altogether. Not just in BBO, but on my entire system. I have to restart my computer to get my sounds to come back. This has happened maybe 3 or 4 times.
movingon
perhaps it is a Vista issue... it won't be the first time. :(
fred
I might be in a position to make a test version or two with a possible fix that those who are experiencing sound problems can try. If the sound problems go away with one of these versions, I will incorporate the changes into the next official release. I don't normally do this sort of thing, but since I can't replicate this problem myself on any of my PCs (including one with Vista), it seems like a good idea to try this. Not clear when this will get done, but hopefully it will happen before I leave for the ACBL Nationals on Wednesday. Keep watching this thread if you think you might be interested. fred
We have made a new version available that hopefully contains a fix to the Vista sound problem: Ljnk to new version Please note that this is not an "official release" - it is being made available only so that I can find out if I have really fixed this problem (which unfortunately does not seem to happen on any of my computers). This version has not been thoroughly tested so it is possible, though unlikely, that I have introduced some new bugs. Sorry in advance if this is the case and there are resulting problems for those of you willing to try this test. This version does have the beginning of some new features that will appeal to those who are interested in the mathematical aspects of bridge. If you are curious you can try: 1) If you click the Options button below a bridge deal either on the right side of the table or through My BBO, Hands and Results, you will see new menu commands for "analyze suit". This facility is still a little rough around the edges and I can't quite promise that the numbers it produces are always accurate. 2) The Deal Source Dialog box (available through My BBO, Hands and results, Hand Editor, Deal Source) now contains "Odds" buttons that compute the odds of being dealt a hand type that you specify (according to possible distribution and HCP range). Again, I am currently not in a position to promise that the numbers are always correct. I am going to a tournament starting tomorrow and I probably won't be paying much attention to either Forums or e-mail until I get home around August 4. Hopefully someone will try the new version by then and let me know if the sound problem has been fixed. If not, then I will try to figure out another possible solution when I get home. elperroloco
I have a problem with sounds, especially when a friend logs in or a vuegraph session starts. There is no annoucement. I have difficulty using a mouse so have opted for keyboard entry for bidding and play. This does not seem to be available on the web version. movingon
I haven't had an opportunity to try the new version in an ACBL tournament... (enjoying a week at a Minnesota lake with family)... will post here after I have the opportunity to play a game ... I did kibitz a table briefly in the "social" rooms and I was hearing sounds when cards were played... so that is looking good!
movingon
I just completed an ACBL tourney using the web version and here is what I found. There is a quiet beep when the tournament starts or when a new hand comes up.There is a quiet thud when it is my turn to bid.I hear another thud when my RHO bids, but I do not hear anything when LHO or partner bids. still a little unsettling.... I expect the problem is with Vista.
