I find it hard to believe that the East hand is invitational, even opposite a shaded takeout double. I would bid game on the East cards. 4 or 5 rates to have play opposite almost any rational takeout double of 1. West should bid 3 to confirm the 8 card fit, and the partnership will get to 4. East may have been misled to believing that there was no 8 card heart fit due to West's pass. But then East should bid 5.

Blame - 100% to West for not getting to 4; 100% to East for not getting to game.

Give West KQJxAQxxxQxxx and no game is on. (A Queen less would also be a normal double, in case you're wondering what did the opponents bid on)

Why did east not open the bidding? Why did east not bid 4 at the end? Why did west not raise east? Too much blame to go around. East gets more since I think he made more mistakes.

Edit: I didn't see the alert on 2. I can't even keep track of all this blame but west now gets a lot more than I said. I think these two just deserve each other. I think this is a good example of people who focus too much on system but have no judgment, and why the latter is what should be taught to learning players.

I don't like making takeout doubles on 12 card hands.

I was West.

In retrospect, I obviously should have bid 3 to let East know I had four hearts. My thinking at the time was that I had already taken an aggressive antifield action, my hand had gotten worse after 1, and I wasn't going to do anything again unless forced.

What did east do wrong other than not open a marginal hand? West lost his mind on this one. 3H over 3D, and obviously 4H over 4C.

Sorry you're right. I should have changed my answer more when I saw the meaning of 2.

Noble I really don't think you are being hard enough on yourself. You have game minus your spade queen and partner's diamond queen and club jack.

I think all four bid like crap. N/S bidding was not better then E/W.

I like the NS result. Somehow they avoided 4 which goes down on the bad spade break (unless declarer is psychic), while 4 is cold. Further, they were allowed to play in 4. Can't get much better than that.

I add my votes to those critical of west... surely opposite an invitational heart bid, he was worth a competitive raise to 3? Which would, correctly in my view, deny a game acceptance hand.. anyone who doubles and thinks they have significant extras plays a different form of the game than I do... maybe a better form for all I know.. but if all partner needs to bid game is my hand, he will take the push after 3.

As it is, while this result is not good, bear in mind that the opps may well find the excellent save over 4.
