new version os software

Recommended Posts

I just got bounced out of BBO in the middle of a lesson and told to download the new version of the software, which I obediently did but then was held up for 10 minutes trying to get back online. I am NOT a happy camper, it is the first time BBO has made me mad enough to wonder about looking around at some other sites, BBO is a fabulous site, but if it is going to start being heavy handed about things and arbitrarilly interrupting whatever people are doing to make them do what BBO wants, in this case to upgrade (which frankly I don't care about in the first place, I am perfectly content with what there was ) well I may start looking at what other options there are out there.

Seems as though it would be far more reasonable, if you are going to insist people upgrade, to insist they do so when they first log into the site for the day. I can't imagine this would be so difficult to arrange, for people who have put a site such as BBO together, and it would be far less highhanded way to go about things. At the very least it would have been courteous to give some advance notice so people weren't yanked out of whatever they were doing and dumped into cyberspace.

You (and everyone else) was booted because the server crashed, not because we "forced" you to upgrade to the new version.

We do not plan for server crashes so we can't warn people that they are going to happen. We try very hard to ensure that the server never crashes, but occasionally we make a mistake.

We are not happy campers either when this happens - it is not much fun to screw something up that has such a violent impact on 10,000 or so people (a signficant % who then get annoyed at us). It is also expensive for us in terms of $.

So if you think you are having a bad day, perhaps a little sympathy of the day that we are having is in order.

Whether or not you want the upgrade, you (and everyone else) need the upgrade. The old version had a built-in limit of roughly 20,000 simultaneous users. We think it is only a matter of time before we reach that limit and that it could easily happen during a vugraph broadcast of the upcoming World Championships.

Hi Fred,

I saw the popup to upgrade the new version, I accepted and then vista asked my permission to run an executable. I am a bit a cautious about these and I said cancel because the name of the exe file seemed unfamiliar and I thought when i restart I will be asked again. After I restarted BBo, I didn't see any warning to download the upgrade. Is it already installed or do I need to manually download the upgrade from your website? The version number appears 5.0.3.

The new version is 5.2.6 so you don't have it installed.

We have temporary suspended the automatic upgrade procedure. Most likely it will start again some time within the next 12 hours or so. It sounds like you will have to wait until after that time - then the new version will download itself again. When that is done, your next login will result in the same question.

If for some reason you don't want to wait until tomorrow (perhaps because you are eager to try our new ACBL convention cards), you can download the latest version through this link:

IMPORTANT: If you try to upgrade manually, make sure that you have exited BBO completely before you click the link above.

Hi Everyone :D

Thanks for V 5.2.6

Yet discovered such features and liked very much:

Keyboard entry for bidding/play. Woow!

GiB Ok. Last score on top left also fine.

CC Ok.

Sound&Colors etc Ok.

TDing also fine.

Shortly good work.

Yesterday with previous version i was host at BIL teaching table. HedyG was also helping. Maybe because of many undos I saw same bids :P (ie more than one a , 2 and 3 in several lines). Auction box was not on top right as usual. Next deal there were no problem. Meanwhile, I learnt that i should wait just a few seconds before upload next prepared deal. Otherwise I stuck and remain with BBO postmessage which unable to cancel. I hope same bugs wont occur in new version.

Regards

Hamdi

I didn't understand it was a server crash as I have been around for one or two crashes before today and had never before got a message. Those I spoke to when I got back had had the same message so I jumped to the conclusion that BBO had had a brain aneurism and started to behave like one of my virus protection programs does. Since now I understand that this was not planned, I do apologise. . A quiet announcement such as been offered before to say what had happened would have been appreciated and saved you from getting screamed at. Sorry.

Hi Fred

Am I correct in reading this that the Old Windows version will cease to work when we reach 20,000 +

I rather like this version and am loathe to upgrade to Client

I only run under Windows XP SP3 and have no intentions EVER of using Vista

But I am getting worried that I may not be able to use BBO

No worries.

You will get an update (you probably already got the update) of the old Windows client, which can handle more than 20000 logins. You don't have to use the flash client.

You probably won't notice any difference.

[out of topic]

Just out of sheer couriosity.... what is the current +- %-ratio between loggins into the web and Windows client?

Robert

[PS] I will probably remain the last member who use win-client with classic view so long as it will be possible, I like it this way ;)

Helene is right - you will be able to continue to use the Windows client for the foreseeable future, but at some point we will have to stop allowing people to log in to BBO with any version older than 5.2.6 (because earlier versions, including the one you have, will crash if more than 20,000 or so people are logged in at once).

From your point of view, 5.2.6 will be almost identical to the version you are using now (hopefully at least!). We have changed what happens when you click the CONV button (and added the ability to create/view ACBL-style convention cards), but I think that is the only change you really rate to notice.

There are 3 major changes that you probably will not notice:

- As described above, 5.2.6 can deal with upwards of 60,000 simultaneous logins whereas the limit was around 20,000 with 5.0.3

- 5.2.6 allows us to distribute new versions of GIB without forcing people to download a new versions of BBO.

- 5.2.6 itself comes with the latest version of GIB (which was previously unavailable)

I wouldn't be surprised if they did at some point. Ari and I are poking at some routine GIB fixes, but we're also fiddling with some weird new approaches towards bidding. When we're done we'll pass them along.

I have no problems with the new software version 5.2.6, but, as a TD, that often helps in clocked tourneys, I am disappointed that the GIB feature that GIB is now no longer available to see the outcome of unfinished hands after the fact. I have a new macro to post in the lobby that will ask people so affected by this to contact uday@bridgebase.com so it will come to his attention and get fixed soon. Meanwhile, short of a complete system install, is there a way to get back the old 5.0.3 version that worked well enough for me?

This seems to be a minor problem that will no doubt soon be corrected in 5.2.7 or so...

I know many TD's that had warned me of the problem, but I assumed, foolishly, that it was already looked after.

I rest assured it will be soon.

I was logged in in BBO today and was thrown out without warning and the new version was installed (Probably I got a message then, don't remember).

I was not at a table, so I didn't mind.

Here's the story...

There are several ways you can be "thrown out of BBO":

1) you log out on purpose

2) the BBO server crashes

3) your BBO client crashes

4) your computer crashes

5) you lose your connection to BBO

Note that "when an automatic upgrade finishes downloading" is not part of this list. The BBO software does not throw you out of BBO when this happens.

No matter how you get thrown out of BBO, the next time you try to log in, if an automatic upgrade has finished downloading, you will be informed of this state of affairs and asked if you want to install the upgrade.
