Partner is almost certainly unbalanced, so we may make quite a lot of diamonds, and as you say they're likely to find their club fit if we try to defend 1♠. To me there is a huge difference between the choices, that I like an original pass far far more than double, which I like far far more than 1NT, which I think is awful.
