BBO Web-client Thread 7

I don't know if it's a bug or a feature-request but suit symbols (!S,!H,!D,!C) don't work in the "describe claim" field in the flash client. Writing "you get !SA" produced that literal text, exclamation mark and all where I was hoping for "you get A" like in chats and alerts.

Thanks for pointing this out. I will get it right in the next version.

in the hand editor, is there a way to make minor changes to newly created deals or saved deals, or do you have to create from scratch? I wanted to change the position of two honors in a deal but I couldn't find a way to edit after 4 hands are dealt.

Some of the fill-in fields in the ACBL CC don't allow enough characters. In "Leb ____ Denies", there only 3 characters are allowed, so you can't write "slow" or "fast" (what else would you want to write there?). And in "Systems on over", I wanted to write "X, Artificial 2C", but I had to cram it into "X,Art2C".

It is basically the same size as on a paper card. You either write in "F" for fast or "S" for Slow. What else would you want to put there?

For my printed convention cards I use Lee Edwards's ACBL Editor app, and it's able to fit the entire word "Fast" or "Slow" in there. Most of its fields allow you to put as much text as you want, and it will overflow the field into the surrounding display area to accomodate it.

In the latest version there is enough room for "fast" or "slow" in that space.

Other spaces are able to accomodate more text now too.

Occasionally as a TD, I will get a private message from a player asking for a board to be reviewed.

If this chat comes via private message, there is no easy mouse navigation route to the Results Pane via the chat window. I find I must either use keyboard entry to type in the player's name in the director screen or use rightclick form the chat window to join the player's table where rightclick then allows me to bring up the results pane. I suspect this issue might exist because the rightclick operation is not set up to recognize that you are a TD and this person is in one of the tournaments you are running and so the option to go to "Player's Results" would not exist on every rightclick operation.

Another option I have used to get to the results pane is to find out at which table the player is playing and navigate to that table in the table list where full rightclick options are available. But finding the persons current table while straightforward it is somewhat cumbersome.

If the rightclick menu could be dynamically changed to allow the rightclick of a name in the chat window to have the "Player's Results" option when appropriate, it would save time by eliminating that extra step on multiple occasions.

Can a mouseover on the title of a tournament on the Director Pane Tournament listing be programmed to bring up the Identification information of a Tournament after a nominal delay?

Currently the only way to find this information is to go into Edit mode which is time consuming, overkill and a waste of resources if you just want to view the information.

Even a right click menu option on the title to bring up Identification box would be a step in the right direction.

Hi Don,

Can you please be more specific about the information you would like to see?

Would the "description" of the tournament be sufficient?

Thanks,

In principle this is possible but...

If a TD is involved in more than one running tournament (which I believe is frequently the case for ACBL TDs like you), there is no easy way for the software to know which tournament a "player's results" request should pertain to.

I will give this some more thought - I understand the problem from your point of view and maybe I can find a way to solve it...

Since a player can only be in one active tournament at a time, I would think that Show Results for Current Tournament would definitely be an 80 for 20 solution.

The system would have to look at the player, see if they were active in a tournament and then either before or after the click would have to check to see if the (clicking) member had permission to view the results.

The problem is that the client itself doesn't necessarily "know" what tournament a given user is playing in and the mechanism that requests results for a player takes a tournament ID as input. It is certainly a solvable problem, but solving it will be awkward.

Anyways, thanks for clarifying. I will discuss your suggestions with Jacki and Uday. If they agrees that these are worthwhile improvements then we will likely make it happen before too long.

Is this also the explanation for why sometimes the rightclick to join table isn't a rightclick option? Do you need to be "linked" to a tournament before the client can find the table of the person in question?

It seems like sometimes, when a private message comes in, I have to view a player's profile to find the tournament and table the person is at and then use the table view to have full rightclick options available.

It happens fairly frequently for me that the "My Results" tab isn't working properly. I click on a row in the results field, it does get highlighted, but the area below (where the play is shown) does not change, i.e. it is still showing the same board as before.

It seems to happen

- always when I have played a tournament, click on the "Other tables", click on some results there, then click on "My table", and then click on the results line for another board.

- sometimes when I am watching vuegraph, click on "Other table", and click on a results line for a board that was played while I was watching.

Using Flash player version 10,0,32,18 on Firefox (3.0.13, ubuntu).

The vugraph issue is the result of an extra level of vugraph security that is currently in use only major WBF tournaments. There is a similar issue under these circumstances with the MOVIE window in the Windows client.

I am not sure what the tournament issue is all about, but thanks for letting me know about it. I will investigate and try to fix the problem in the next version.

When checking out the results at the other table during a vugraph match, there seems to be no indication of the names of the players at the other table. The best way to find out that I have found is to go to "BBO now" to open the vugraph window and scroll through to find the other table with the names of the players listed.

When I am looking through my friends list and right click on a player's name, there is no "join player's table" option unless I have previously opened his profile.

This is another consequence of the WBF's vugraph security procedures not working seemlessly with our software. The web-client will work as you would expect it to for non-WBF tournaments.

That is because, unlike the Windows client, the web-client doesn't "know" if a given player is at a table or not. The reason we do this is because the approach taken in the Windows client is not scalable. When some sufficiently large number of users are online the Windows client will grind to a halt - those with slow connections might notice this happening already at times. When some other sufficiently large number of users is online our servers will grind to a halt as a result of having to service too many Windows clients.

When the server is slow (thankfully, a rare occurrence these days), you can actually see what's going on. When you bring up a player's profile, it may display "Searching" for a few seconds before displaying what table the player is at (and occasionally when things are really overloaded, the profile window may time out before it finishes). It would be unacceptable to have to wait for this when just popping up the menu, so I assume right-click doesn't even try.
