I would have bet beforehand that I'd feel somewhat indifferent. But I didn't. There's a picture of Michael Jackson from the Bad Tour (1988) on the front page of the WP style section that really gets me. Can't get enough of seeing people doing their thing. He didn't turn into a creepy weirdo until well into his career, after selling tens of millions of albums and making some ground-breaking music videos (e.g. "Thriller"). His career didn't span as much time as Elvis Presley, but I think it's safe to say that when he as at the top he was as popular as Elvis had been to the previous generation, and Frank Sinatra to the generation before that. I couldnt get over the saturation coverage even here on the other side of the world. The national news on a popular network devoted its first 20 mins to MJ, including interviewing a local school girl who was too upset to go to school and a fan who spent the day sobbing in his MJ shrine at the back of his house. It's not just Michael Jackson, it's also about Britney, Amy, you name it.
