Your partner deals and opens 1. You play a natural system so with your HCP you should either bid 2NT or 3. Which one would you choose?

With the same hand and agreements (SAYC), what would you bid over 1? 1 or 2NT?

Which of these aspects should affect your decision:

- It's the first hand of a team match.

- Neither side is vulnerable.

If partner opened 1, I would support diamonds; if partner opened 1, I would bid 1. I think both are obvious.

I would raise diamonds if partner opened them (I prefer inverted, but if I must bid 3D to show this hand, so be it).

If partner opened 1C, I would bid 1D. There is a lot of reasons, not the least of which with partner having clubs, I don't really want to play the hand in nortrump from my side of the table. I assume minors will not be a problem for possible NT contract, but leads from either major it would better in the long run if partners holding in those suits got to play last (positional value)

First hand or not, vulnerable or not, that is how I would bid this hand.
