Team Matches

Recommended Posts

The major drawback of the current setup is that it requires coordination among several BBO members by a host. This effectively nullifies "pick-up" matches often sought after by individuals, partnerships, and teams of four. Since the ability to quickly join a single table with a partner and play cross-imps or MPs is built-in, it seems logical to create the same opportunity for team games.

The simplest solution in my opinion is to create an area similar to the main bridge club. Hosts can initiate matches in order to set options like barometer, undos, TD, etc. and then people could see a list of matches and join at their leisure. Of course hosts can still require permission to join or reserve seats allowing for both public and private matches.

Taking this idea a step farther, team matches seem like a great opportunity to incorporate a matching system like the ones used for online gaming. Individuals, partnerships, and teams could register under the team match tab and await a tournament that meets their specifications. Matching could be done by system preference for individuals and by skill level range (eg. requesting only beginner thru advanced players). This would save the user time by not having to scroll through the list of team matches to find suitable match conditions.

Down the road it would be especially neat to maintain a ladder system for pairs and teams that play team matches just like we have for the current masterpoint leaders. Rankings could be based on W/L record or on a point system depending on the number of boards played and skill of opposition. Of course this would require lots of storage on BBO's part, so I'm not expecting it any time soon. Just a thought for the future.

Finally, I've been told that the chat to lobby feature does not exist in the web client. While this certainly eliminates unnecessary chatter to idle users, it makes it impossible to issue public invitations for team matches.

Seconded. Or perhaps I should say nought'thd. Some of the above has been repeatedly requested. I sympathise with Fred and Uday and the team. It is a question of juggling priorities. It is about top of *my* priorities but heck, I am a freebie leeching off the system. That said, what has been produced from the Flash client is way beyond my feeble anticipation a year or so ago, so I am content to sit back and let it happen when it will.

Yes, Jackie and BBO having been working towards team ACBL tourneys for at least 2 years. They have all the needed permits. They have experimented with formats. Now we just need the demand.

As for Flash I still do not understand what the deal is with that. If it permits playing on handheld devices or saves BBO money, great, otherwise as a customer I am lost.

btw there are never really that many open teammatches at any one time on bbo, most of the time you have the option of choosing a couple and then waiting to see if accepted.

Many teammatches are semiprivate among known friends.

Maybe we could have a bam competition hosted by a director.

swans bridge use to have one such game.

you sign up for the game the same way you sign for a pairs tournament but you need 4 names.

the hands are scored in matchpoints at time of play and the bam points are calcualted after the game.

i suspect they do it by hand because the results were not posted till the next day.

I have wondered for some time if there might be some value in having a team match club set up in somewhat the same fashion as the TotalPoints club. Set times for matches, people could arrive with/without partner/team and get set up by alternating volunteer directors. (or set their own tables, if the boards are going to be for just the two tables.)

A friend passed on to me a program he had written to allow for multiple tables (rather than just two) to be set the same hands, which would be wonderful except that I was afraid to try it as the setting of matches is so time sensitive. (one glitch and you might well have to set all the tables again.) If anyone wanted to tweak it to see if they could make it faster/easier to use then I will ask him for permission..I am no computer person so it won't be me.

That said, Ray's Bridge Ladder is available for pairs or teams who wish to play at least semiregularly. It was also free last time I looked, and I think it is possible to set up your own leagues. Games are played on BBO.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Doing a general overhaul of how team matches are set up and introducing support for various new types of team movements are currently among our highest priorities. I can't make any promises, but I suspect you will see some changes in this area within the next few months.
