Adam is too young for this stuff. :)

It is called penalty double and was out of fashion even before he was born.

The surprising concept is, that you double them when you think they will fail.

You should play this in junior events and your score will skyrocket through the ceiling.

But then it's a junior who has opened 1 in third seat (as he happens to be, coincidently).

Its only good if you have an agreement.

I thought we were discussing the merits of (a) agreeing to play this double as takeout and (b) making a takeout double on xxx x KJxxx Qxxx.

If when you said that it was "incredibly dangerous on a non-fit auction" you meant that it was dangerous to do it without prior agreement, I agree.

This double doesn't make sense as penalty unless your 3rd seat openings are always real openings, and it doesn't make sense as a general t/o at all.

Btw a hand interested in penalizing opps would start with rdbl, then opener can dbl 1NT if he has a real opening. Or maybe this pair swapped pass and rdbl? Never seen that but I have thought about that it might be fun to play.

I think it should be a specific t/o, probably showing both minors. Not that it will come up very frequently since responder will normally have some spades in this auction. But 5-5 minors is the only thing I can think of.

Without discussion I would never make this dbl.
