Swan over 3H.

I am not a leaping Michaels fan but I play it with one partner. I would jump to 5C playing that. This is different from jumping to 5C when you don't play NLM of course.

I wouldn't bid 4C NLM Josh. This is forcing and I think 5C will be right more often than 4S on the hands where partner bids 4S. Partner will always be bidding spades with equal length.

5C. The thought of passing 3NT after we make a takeout double is quite painful

I think 3Nt will be slighty better than 5C in the long run.

Are you planning to let partner play in spades?
After a X, of course.

Even if 4 is right 1/3 of the time, they only have to save me by doubling me 1/4 of the rest of the time (1/3 + [1/4 * 2/3]) = 50%) for me to reach the better suit half the time by starting with 4. So in practice I'm not convinced bidding 5 is better.

Well in hindsight they could also double me when 4 is right too. Ok I just don't know what's best.

Maybe its a good idea to play that after a 3H preempt, NLM can be a 6-4ish type and that 4D is a slam try while 4H is pick a game (3-3, 2-2 or even 3-2). Having 2 slam try and no pick-game is probably not optimum.

After a S preempt however 4H is to play and 4D is better played as a slam try than a pick a game.
