I think this is a good problem.

There's three choices that I see:

1. We can double to show defense. We will be very happy is pard saws off 2 (but this is dreaming (see #3). If I hear a 2 call on my left, I would then bid 3 which seems like a good description.

2. We can make a diamond raise immediately. The problem with this is that our subsequent doubles are really 'card-showing', and won't be left in probably. It will also be very tough to get to 3N, since pard will have a very tough bidding problem. Imagine something like: xx xxx AKxxxx AQ.

3. A direct 2N. I'm not enamored with trying to defend, and the fact is it will be tricky for pard to smack 2 with Kxx.

I think I like #3.

2NT.

I don't want to show a diamond raise with invitational values when I'm looking at only two cover cards and a very high expectation of bad splits everywhere.

I don't want to show a simple raise of diamonds with this much stuff and this much major-suit control.

2NT is about right on playing strength and one where my values are.

Double, double, toil and trouble. Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

I agree, Ron. For me double shows the desire to whack at least one of their suits and solicites PD's cooperation and also shows values. Looking at the vul, we may be missing game, so here double has to be interested in whacking both of their suits if PD can cooperate.

PD may have a balanced min and then we aren't likely to make game. I am not letting the opps off the hook by bidding my weakisk 4 card support.
