For some reason I found this agonizing...

Pass. What else can you do? Both sides not vul. If your partner can only win three tricks in his suit, they may have a slam, if he can win four, it is not so bad, surely they have game. If he can only win two tricks, what did he overcall on? This is imps after all.

This was the full hand:

[hv=d=w&v=n&n=skqxxxhktxxdtcqxx&w=sjhqxxdkjxxxcatxx&e=satxxxhajxdaxxckx&s=sxxhxxxdqxxxcjxxx]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

I chose to pass. Down 4 for -800.

At the other table, South faced the same situation and chose to make an SOS redouble. After North bids 2, E-W decided not to go for the penalty and ended up in 3N making 5.

Afterwards I was wondering if maybe Redouble is best. I know that spades are splitting 5-1 or 6-0 with the spades behind my partner. He might not make many tricks at all. Even though rdbl bumps it up to the 2-level, I see 2 added bonuses:

  • trumps might not split as badly
  • opps might overbid us (like at the other table)

I'm still not sure what the best action is in general, but I was curious what the concensus here was.

2X

2. A

3. ruff

4. K

5. ruff

6. A

7. ruff

8. ruff

9. ruff with jack

10 Ace

NS take three tricks, down five. 100, 300, 500, 800, 1100, 1400. Have a talk with your partners about not being cruel to their 2 contract, as you missed out on a yummy 600 point swinging 20 imps (win 12 instead of lose 8).

About 1X. Winning only 3 tricks is pretty nice defense. I would think, looking at the hands, you might manage 4 as defending 1 looks harder than defending 2.

I would consider redoubling on a 1444 or heart/club two-suiter with singleton spade, but even then I might pass (because chances are pard will have 6 spades).

With a 2344 and opponents having bid diamonds, the only escape is into 2, but that works only if pard has 4 of them. A rather long shot... Stick to 1 doubled - the attempt to improve the contract rates to make things worse. Note that if pard had 5 clubs or 5 hearts, he would have rescued himself.
