It was imps.

At one table they overcall 2D and East bid 2S in balancing. South double with 2 tricks hoping partner got nice trump stack -100

3D is going to be doubled for -200. 3Hx will be a disaster.

I believe that at these color a michael should be done only with a strong hand. IMO south hand qualify but has no extras and i think that 2D is probably ok too.

2 would be my third choice.

I prefer showing the two suiter and just bidding the hearts to overcalling 2.

Seems rather likely if we bid 2, LHO is going to be declaring spades and partner leading a diamond. I think 2 might be my fourth choice, with pass as third.

But then again, I would not have the creativity to double them at IMPs at the two level hoping partner has four tricks and my two cash, so what do I know?

Are you sure it's going down?

Yeah, it doesn't look like that bad of a contract. I mean, suppose you get a top spade lead. You ruff, cash two top heartys and see the Queen drop, and then ruff a heart, presumably with the forced King. A heart back may get an Ace hop, say, and another spade. So, you ruff again, cash the heart Queen, and then run hearts until RHO ruffs. It seems like you end up with nine tricks.

So, let's say they cash two clubs on opening lead and then lead a diamond to the Ace and back. Now, you lose only one diamond. Sure, you now lose a heart, but that's still nine tricks.

I suppose the trick is to not fall for the heart hook, but why would you?

I haven't analyzed it in details, but it seems that west should not ruff in on the 3rd round of hearts. Then east can give him a ruff later. Perhaps there is a counter to this, but it's too late here for me to think about that right now. ;)

I ruff low, ruff a spade, ruff a heart, ruff another spade, and lead a club in this position:

[hv=d=w&v=n&n=sqtxhdcqxx&w=skjhdxxckj&e=shdajxcatx&s=shjdqtxcxx]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

So far I haven't lost any tricks, and I can't be prevented from scoring Q10.

I think the defence went wrong at trick one, when they led a top spade. They can afford to cash some clubs, but after that they have to play hearts. Not an easy defence to find.
