Cascade
With whom were you playing Wayne? Someone from the non serious bridge club? Which seat do you think is me? At the club most (at the tables where I talked with players) were acting with the south hand so there was no problem for north.
the hog
I suspect you held the South hand and passed as did most of us here. The other question is, "Would they lead a C against 6H?"

I didn't see many scores - we played it third - and didn't hear about anyone in 6♥. Someone was in 6♦ making without a club lead. You judged well. I was south and passed. However I am not convinced that it is right for North to act over 4♠ with a six-loser 11 HCP hand.

Sure it is not a 100% safe action, but ....You probably would have bid 6 something though.I remember talking to burgess about something similar some years ago. He said you would have to take a weaker Nth hand into account if Nth acted. I don't think I would have the restraint.
whereagles
well, we BOTH had spade shortage after all :)

jdonn
Partner certainly is a lot closer to acting than we were.

gnasher
Not sure what the laughter's about. I think double on the North hand is clearcut.
jdonn
Yes I will say that's the least deserved LOL I have ever gotten, in fact maybe the first ever that was undeserved, and it itself deserves a LOL.
kenrexford
I am curious where JLOL lands on this, as only "LOL" has been provided as to either person's options. The "LOL" suggests thinking South has a stronger argument for doubling/bidding than North, but it's hard to read laughter. LOL

655321
Hmm, my interpretation of the LOL is that "Partner certainly is a lot closer to acting than we were." is not a strong enough statement in favor of bidding. i.e. North's double in fact is clearcut, but jdonn's statement could be read as saying that, while North is closer (than South) to having a bid, he still has a pass. (LOL at us analyzing a LOL )
mikeh
Ok, I agree with the (obvious) passes for S.. as for North, I think that he should act if possible. How? Is this a double? or 4N? I use 4N as any two suits, with double being 3 suits but, in this scenario, expecting a leave-in much of the time... obviously we hit a home run on this one if we double and manage to avoid 6♦ on a club lead. But this hand is awfully weak to take that action.. maybe it's my age showing, and I am not saying I wouldn't double... having seen all the hands, I can't be sure what I would do. But I have sympathy for the result at the table.

benlessard
South pass is clear cut. North should act like hes in the balancing seat. Surely if it goes (3S)----P-------(4S)------P(P)------??? and you have a 0544 and some values, passing W/W would not cross your mind right ? So its the same thing for me.
