Old York
Double with the West hand is very weird, it wouldn't occur to me even in England, much less with a non-British p. Sorry, I was just stating the facts and not suggesting that double was correct. The interesting part of this hand is what happens after:1♣-(1♦)-pass-(1♠/1NT)pass-(??)after 1♠ some rebid 2♦ or 1NT which cannot be right?after 1NT many passed It is imperative to find the Heart fit on this hand Tony
P_Marlowe
Hi, playing standard methods, it is hard to discover the heart fit. After the normal start (1C) - 1D - (Pass) - 1S (1)(Pass) - ??? (1) I agree, 1S is more sane, than 1NT ( ) or 1H, but I never claimed to always bid in a sane manner You have a problem: #1 The hand is not good enough to bid 2H#2 One is missing a club stopper#3 One is missing a spade (or two spades) => It is either Pass (if 1S is nonforcing) or 2D, or if 1Spromised a reasonable suit 2S.After a 2D bid , the partner has an fairly easy 2H, showing 5-4 in the majors, in which case you discovered your heart fit. But the overcaller has to make the right decision, and it is notalways 100% clear cut, which one he should make, depending of course on methods. You have it easier, if you played the polish notrump, the given hand is a brilliant example, why some people like to play thisconvention: A 1NT overcall show 5 diamonds and a 4 card major, 8-15HCP). With kind regardsMarlowe PS: To complete the short description of the polish NT:After a major suit opening a 1NT overcall showes 4 card in the other major and a 5 card minor suit with 8-15.And a 2C / 2D overcall usually denies a 4 card major suit.(I am not advocating it.)
