vesuvius (what's your name, btw?): if, in your style, you bid michaels on 5-4s frequently, the 1 advance over 1 can be always 5 cards.

 

This is because overcaller, with a 5-4, would have bid michaels instead of the 1 overcall. If he doesn't michael, he probably doesn't have 4 spades, making the 4 card 1/1 pointless.
