1-(5)-?[/hv]

Playing a generic 2/1, with an expert partner and against expert opponents (you are the worst player at the table, at any rate). RHO is known to be a bit of a wild card, if that makes a difference to you.

2nd question: Would you do something different at matchpoints?

Abstain, I'm never the worst player at the table.

I never used to be the worst player at any table, either. Then I improved my self-evaluation technique...

5, not happy about it but I would always bid 5.

Am I really supposed to make different bids when I think I am the worst, second worst, second, best, best player at the table? Maybe this sort of thinking contributes to my being the worst player at the table...

sorry, didn't mean your own skill level to be a consideration, so much as letting you know that the skill level of your opponents is fairly high. I shouldn't have added it to the OP, as it's distracting from the problem.

5 -- payoff to the preempt if both that and 5 go down or the bid eggs pard into bidding 6, -1.

I bid 5 spades too, turns out both 5 clubs and 5 spades go down on perfect defense, and both make on squeezes on non-perfect defense (which is what happened at the table). I thought the decision was closer than the voting indicated, though.

5. 6 might work in practice as LHO very well could take a phantom if RHO has something extra.

Still, we are probably losing a club trick, so pard needs gin in the other suits to make 6.

Call for director, as there must be two J's in the deck.

RHO obviously have:

Dealer: ?????
Vul: ????
Scoring: Unknown
2
Q10
K8
AJ1085432

The full hand was actually:

[hv=n=s65hq875dakj853cq&w=sa2hkt964dqt64c94&e=st4hd72cakt876532&s=skqj9873haj32d9cj]399|300|[/hv]

RHO took the club lead, returned a trump, and LHO followed with another trump. Curtains on the red suit squeeze.

5 clubs makes if I lead a singleton diamond, partner takes the first two and leads a 3rd diamond (or really, leading anything but a spade), trying to promote a trump for me. Declarer then ruffs high, and has a major suit squeeze on me.

find something to throw at RHO

A wonderful choice If we are in Advanced and Expert-Class fighting ;)

Is it so bad? I mean for once we actually do have a very powerful suit to introduce and also the playing strength for a 5-level bid.

Isn't the squeeze still on after ace of clubs, spade, spade? They would have to switch to a diamond to break it up.

Yes. I made the hand because of the misdefense, on the squeeze, did not mean to leave you with the impression that it went down.
