whereagles
Matchpoints, none vuln, you hold: ♠ Q♥ 543♦ AT8742♣ A87 Pard LHO you RHO1♠ ... 2♣ .. 2♦ pass2♥ .. pass ?? 2♦ was natural, 1 round force. Your bid and why?
chicken
if 2♥ is unlimited i bid 2NT if not i give up and pass.
ArtK78
Pass. Partner knows that I do not promise a rebid when I bid 3♦. My alternative is 3♦, but given that pard has at least 9 cards in the majors, there is no reason to believe that 3♦ will play better than 2♥. You should get out of this auction now that you have a fit, even if it is only a 4-3 fit. With a singleton spade and aces in the minors, 2♥ should play well. helene_t
I'm afraid 2♥ is forcing. 2NT.

mcphee
Nice spot we got ourselves into. I break the rules and raise H using the old I had a D in with my H, and making a stunned look when pard asks why no neg dble with 5-4?. Pass is risky, you could miss an easy game. Good spot for a conventional 2N that asks what the 2H bid is all about.
jdonn
2♥ is clearly forcing. We didn't promise partner a rebid over certain rebids by him, but new suits are unlimited. So 2NT.
mtvesuvius
I was leaning toward 3♥, but I guess 2NT is probably much better.
Phil
I'm not passing. 2♥ is forcing. How high is a matter of partnership - it should be suit agreement I think. I'll bid 2♠ I guess. I don't like it at all, but I like it more than 2N, 3♦ or 3♥.
se12sam
I appreciate the comments about the 2♥ being forcing. With this hand, I would have bid anyway but it is useful to know the right treatment of 2♥ as a force. A random thought -- What if partner has ♣Qx? Is there a "standard" way to make partner the declarer in 3NT? Thanks
andy_h
2H is forcing, so I'm not passing. Not 3D with this rotten suit, not 3C as that's an overbid so I think I will bite with 2NT.
whereagles
Thanks all. Opener had ♠ AJ432♥ KQJ962♦ -- ♣ T6 It's an interesting question whether 2♥ should be forcing or not. I believe it should because responder always has the strength to make another rebid, so no need for opener to waste space with a jump/cue just because he has a good 14 or 15 and fears responder passes. At table responder passed and opener took 11 tricks. Of course, it would have been a lot easier if opener had started with 1♥, but I believe game should have been reached anyway. By the way, having started 1♠, would you have jumped to 3♥ over 2♦? Opener didn't do it because of the diamond void and possible misfit. jdonn
By the way, having started 1♠, would you have jumped to 3♥ over 2♦? Having started 1♠, I would have quit bridge forever.
whereagles
go ahead. we'll be better off without you
jdonn
You are the one who asked the question. Anyway sorry to disappoint but I didn't actually start 1♠, it was more of an if/then statement, so I guess you are just stuck with me for now.
