Phil
♠AJ87♥9xx♦Y♣AKT52 You open 1♣ and partner bids 1♠. What is the minimum value for "Y" that you would bid 3♠ on. Thanks.
hanp
K. Is 3D not an option?
mtvesuvius
3♦ can be used as a shapely raise (3♥ asks shortness), and if so, I would bid it with "J" otherwise I need at least "K"
JLOL
Definitely yes with the A and definitely no with the Q. I would probably just bid 2 at MP with the K, and 3 at imps. edit: OK in real life I'd probably always bid 3 with the K. edit2: If HAN bids 3 with the king then it's obv right. hanp
To be honest I went to a similar thought process as you. Definitely with the ace and definitely not with the queen. With the king? Well, if I'm even considering 3S then it has to be right.
whereagles
The K seems just about fine for that action.
Phil
I should have mentioned its MPs. I 3♠'d anyway, but think like Justin and Han. The "Y" was the K. 3♦ works better - for some reason I didn't consider it, although I didn't think that was the crux of the issue. Pard held: KQxx, x, QT9xx, 9xx, and couldn't quite bring it home when trumps blew 4-1.
ArtK78
As I play that 3♦ shows either a mini-splinter or a better than game forcing splinter, x is sufficient for a 3♦ call. We could be playing with a deck of close to 30 HCP on this hand if partner has a fair hand with no duplication. I would never bid 3♠ with a side suit singleton and 4 card support.
