'A' Flt regional Swiss, two teams in contention. The auction is (2) P (3)x (3N) P (4) all pass.

3[C] asked for a feature, 3N showed a club stopper. The 3 was a psyche, as the hands suggest... and it worked.. should either player have acted?

At the other table, the more straightforward raise to 4 had S bidding 4N to reach 5[/hv]

I'm not completely sure north should overcall although I can believe it. But I would also play south's double as takeout of spades, and no matter what it was I can't imagine why north wouldn't at least double 3NT.

I agree with the double of 3N by N... but how does that get them to 5? maybe it should.... btw, I was the 4N bidder at the other table... EW were a new, tho expert, partnership and had not had any discussions about the meaning of the double of 3.

Well I can't say I have tons of experience in a spot like this. Probably south could still bid 4NT when east runs to 4. Even if north and south both passed on the first round south could balance with 4NT, or 3NT over 3, and north would bid 5 in all cases.

N could have overcalled 3

N could have doubled 3NT

S could have bid 4NT over 4

Too many 'coulds' here. The bad result is a compound of a string of decisions, all of which worked wrong. I don't blame anyone in particular. (In fact, I hardly ever blame anyone in these ATB problems :))

Ok I supposed I could say mike gets the blame :) Even if he wasn't playing.. LOL.
