Edit: Found on WineHQ where I could copy the font into the fake C:\ drive and then to make matters even easier, when I clicked to download the bbo software, Firefox offered to "open with wine" so it installed easily. I had to close and reopen it after installing gecko and needed to use the Ctrl-W mentioned earlier but otherwise it worked wonderfully.

 

Thanks, everyone. Incidentally, performance seems to be about equivalent to or even better than in Windows. I will need to use it more to be sure though.

Right, it's better not to, otherwise the root becomes owner of the created directories so you cannot add new files without running bbo as root.

Hi,

 

I'm new here. Installed Mandriva 2008 and wine. Installed sybols font. Setting wine to Win98 mode (firefox windows opens with the same content like the bbo window, when I click, otherwise I cant Kiebitz or play - nothing happens).

So everything works fine.

But, how can I change the font. It's big and bold, much too big and bold.

Settings, font size -> small etc. doesn't work.

Very strangely, while it works flawlessly on my laptop, I can't get it work on my workstation for some reason. I'm not really sure what the difference could be, but here's the error message I get in case someone has seen it before: (this is on Ubuntu 6.10, wine v 0.9.22. BBO downloaded today, not sure what version). It seems to crash immediately after loading the player list (perhaps during).

I installed newer wine, and at the point where it crashed before, wine asked me to install some kind of gecko that I didn't have. So that was indeed the cause, and it works fine now.

Just reinstalled for ubuntu 7.10.

 

One thing that I noticed was that my query for BB$ activity would not accept text entry into the fields. Not sure why.

A while ago I became the maintainer for the entry on the WineHQ database for BBO. During a pointless exercise for one of my clients, I managed to connect and play a hand at BBO under 37 different distros.

 

If anyone has read the entries entered by Gerrado and is still stuck please e-mail paul.hayes700@ntlworld.com. Other than a few GIB problems and a slight hitch with the differences between the free and non-free implementations of symbol.ttf I think we are there.

 

Please if you are stuck tell me as I want to make this a supported application then I can go back to losing at this beautiful infuriating game.

It's really amazing how far this has come. Just for kicks, after not having a linux install handy for about a year (What can I say, felt like doing some lisp hacking...), installed the latest Ubuntu 8.04 beta. Installed wine, downlaoded bbo_setup.exe, ran without a hitch, and once I installed symbol.ttf, BBO runs absolutely flawlessly. Just like on Windows. Oh, one difference...the font rendering is nicer :)

 

I can finally comfortably switch my main OS over to Linux (my preference) since I no longer need to have Windows around to run BBO properly.

I love linux, ubuntu, and wine for making bbo run under gnome.

But, with the Xfce desktop ( Xubuntu ) it did not work properly. All the pop-up-spam-thingy which reguire gecko is my main suspect at the moment. I received a long list of errorcatching when a pop-up came up.

 

Not a biiig problem, but... I was gonna try xfce because I am planning on using it on an old laptop.

 

It MIGHT be some conflict with the desktops - I originally installed ubuntu, then the kubuntu and xubuntu desktop - the latter not behaving properly.

It solved my problem. There seems to be an error with the gecko engine - i have been experimenting with my install lately, so I would not be surprised if this is my own doing. The result now being I do not have any more ads and popup's - which I am quite happy with even though a cruise-vacation in the Carrabien's is tempting :lol:

Hi wonder if you can help.

 

I've just got an Acer eeePc which is posing a couple of issues as far as BBO under wine is concerned. The main one is that none of the buttons at the bottom of the screen are working (back, table, redeal, etc.) - any ideas? This is progress from where I was an hour ago, but it still ain't usable :ph34r: I've tweaked everything I can think of in winecfg and bbover.ini but no joy.

 

Secondary issue is screen size - this pc is only 800x480 - but I'm hoping that when I can click the options button i'll be able to do something to help that - ctrl-w doesn't seem to do anything ...

BBO makes an assumption about initial screen reso, i think.

 

I haven't had the time to get my eeepc up & running w/wine but i did notice that the flash beta ( tho it is mighty cramped ) is usable with some creative resizing. The next beta will be out in a couple of days, with luck, and I'll try again then. In the meantime, if you have a link to getting wine going for someone who isnt much of a unix-person, my email address is @bridgebase.com (use uday@)

 

 

I did notice that something causes the eepc to get disc'd regularly when using the flash client and that needs to be sorted out at some point. Eventually I hope to convince Fred to give us a "compact" client for use w/small screens. it will have to be the flash thing, i'm sure, not the original.

Well I installed wine by following the instructions in this thread http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=19840

 

I'm reasonably seasoned with linux but not the eeePC or Xandros ... and I've never had to use wine before. However I'm hoping the eeePC can take the place of my large WinXP laptop as far as possible. To do that, BBO is pretty essential.

 

I've also just tried installing the demo version of Crossover Office and I get the exact same problem.

 

Hang on a sec, did I hear you mention a Flash version of NetBridgeVu.exe ? That sounds like just the ticket. I could dispense with wine entirely. Where can I get the beta from? :)

That beta is struggling now ( we upgraded the server to prepare for the next beta, and not everything seems fully backwards compatible). But the next one will be out in a day or so.
