BBO for Linux

Recommended Posts

ok, been meaning to do this for ages and finally got around to it today.

- copied symbols font ahead of time

- using CrossOver Office 4.2 (not sure which version of wine that shipped with, tbh)

- let cxoffice do the install, and then had to create my own shortcut:

"/home/scoob/cxoffice/bin/wine" --workdir "C://bbo" --check --bottle dotwine --cx-app "C:////bbo////NetBridgeVu.exe"

- edited bbover.ini

seems to be running just fine, first try

2.6.17-11-generic, ubuntu-edgy

will likely try running it straight from newest wine and see if there's any diff.

Just installed wine 0.9.36 under Ubuntu Feisty. Changed LINUX_WINE=N to Y

First time I started netbridgevu after installing, it didn show any hands, auctions, table lists or player lists, saying "html browsing temporarily disabled" or some such. Next time, it said that the application tried to start a browser window and I could select "yes" to install gecko. That solved the problem.

Then I quited and installed system.ttf, Next time I started netbridgevu it crashed with a page fault. The debugger said it couldn't write to the registry. I gave everyone R/W permissions to my registry (nice to know if you want to hack my computer, lol) but that didn solve the problem.

I can run netbridgevu under sudo, though. That works fine.

Only problem that remains is that the window is too big. I cannot see the lower part of it, with the navigation buttons. So I can go back to the lobby.

Use Ctrl-W to change the window size. (Found this in a BBO Help file.)

I presume you installed symbol.ttf (not system.ttf). I don't know why you need sudo to run the program -- mine runs just fine with regular wine -- maybe you are writing to an oddball disk partition?

Nice thread guys. Ubundu Feisty, had it install Wine. Updated bbover.ini. Muddled through installing symbol.ttf when my suit symbols were not working. Have not yet tested everything extensively, but thanks to this thread, getting BBO working was pretty easy.

Hello,

I have an interesting effect:

BBO hangs completely after I pass mouse over any button (like "Back", "Home", etc.). It does not depend on LINUX_WINE and BROWSER_TYPE as far as I see.

I use gentoo with wine 0.9.29 and BBO 5.0.3

May be somebody already solved similar issue or can help with getting older version of BBO (4.9.9 was working just fine)

You can try increasing the delay before the tooltip shows up (in the options screen, invoked by the yellow gear button on the bottom). this may help mitigate the effects while the underlying issue gets fixed

if you want to try an older version email me and i'll set you up (uday@)

mention your bbo username in that email

Ubuntu Feisty Fawn ( 7.04 )

Wine

BBO 5.0.3

Gecko installed when BBO demanded through wine.

Installed correctly, symbol.ttf placed.

Not able to use large view - and symbols in auction and !S !H !D !C does not show correctly; it only shows a X...in the correct colour though...

What is wrong?

EDIT: Problem solved. I used a soft link instead of copying the file - something went wrong with the permissions or something....

"ln -s /media/sda1/WINDOWS/Fonts/symbol.ttf symbol.ttf"

did the trick :) I am a first-time linux user, so I am pretty happy to have BBO working with Ubuntu through Wine :)

easy installation, nice look and very playable without crashes !

only slight problem, as firmit mentioned before : unable to use large view (bottom bar with "table" and "claim" not visible) . is there a way to adapt screen size in wine ?

thank you

Sometimes netbridgevu freezes during the movement. The "waiting for response from server" stays forever. Clicking "log off" gives no result. When trying to close the window I get the message "Not responding" from Ubuntu, and it offers me to force quit.

I had the idea that it happened when I did not use sudo (I think the problem was that the registry was owned by the root) but yesterday I used sudo and still got a freeze just after midnight CEST, first movement in the ACBL speedball. The TD subbed me out, tried to sub me back in later, but then I got a freeze again. Other tourneys did not give any problems, whether before or after the ACBL tourney.

It is my impression that it is more likely to occur if I have used Firefox just before the move. Yesterday I had been using Firefox just before the movement, but not before the TD tried to sub me back in.

Ubuntu Feisty, ADSL with cable (ethernet) connection to the laptop, Gecko browser set up as default for BBO but http-links in BBO don't work. Dell Inspiron 4100. I have a few other problems with the laptop: for example, Google Earth (Native Linux version) causes the computer to reboot.

Helene,

Google Earth for me will open but then it will trash the video inside its space; horrible result.

I also had the same issue until I changed my DNS to OpenDNS; now it's quite smooth (and quick quick too, smokin' fast) and it won't hang.

What's your MTU set for, 1492?

What's an MTU? How do I change DNS to openDNS? (Is that a different protocol? never heard about it).

Same protocol, different servers.

MTU = Maximum Transmission Unit, the max size of packet (if bigger, will be fragmented).

Frozen in movement. Used to happen, I think somewhat related to FD. Doesn't happen anymore.

Wine still freezes sometimes, no discernible pattern. Ubuntu Gutsy here.

For DSL connections Helene, most of them use PPPoE, which requires 8 bytes of overhead data to function correctly (thusly 1492). Ethernet however, runs at 1500 because it does not need the overhead.

In Administration -> Network Tools, highlight your network interface (probably eth0) and in the lower left corner it'll tell you the MTU for that device. If it says 1492, then the O/S has seen the connection correctly. If not, run out to the terminal and type this in:

ifconfig eth0 mtu 1492

That'll set the packet size for your session. To make it permanent, you have to edit your interfaces file and add a tag something like "pre-up /sbin/ifconfig $IFACE mtu 1492" and save it. Then reboot or restart the file.

I got it to work very easily on Ubuntu (7.04) today. I had to install msttcorefonts to get the cards to look normal (and symbol.ttf off my windows machine). I get a bunch of errors at startup ("class not registered") but it runs.

The only problem is that it's incredibly slow (~5 seconds to make a bid or play a card, which makes it almost uplayable).

Running it with linux_wine=n actually sped it up a bit, but it's still not smooth. Is this just something I'll have to live with?

Also, is there a way to get it to take up the whole height? It was at this state initially, but ctl-w set it back to normal proportions. "Maximize" is disabled for me.

Thanks.

Ubuntu 7.10 beta (about to head to final)

BBO is self-terminating under heavy loads on this machine. Suspect that memory leaks are possible. Am upgrading Wine to the 47 build, and changing the linux wine statement to N to see if I gain performance.

K. Am back.

The upgrade to the 47 build is not out yet as of this posting. I changed the default O/S to XP for emulation and verified a few things.

edit: I did get the 47 build and am going through it.

I also changed the priority of the wineserver and the BBO executable to a minus 4 to make it a little higher up the food chain. We'll see what happens.

ubuntu gutsy, wine 9.4.7, gecko engine, and symbol.ttf

no changes to ini settings

up and running first try, no issues, no lag, no disconnects

mind you, this machine is quite a bit more powerful than the last one i was using which probablyl explains the lack of lag more than anything else

Hi folks. I'm a total noob to Linux and just installed Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10).

I could really use a step by step guide to:

a ) where to put the symbol.ttf file

b ) installing apps under wine

Please and thanks. Please bear in mind I know almost nothing about Linux. I only managed to install Wine by copying the instructions from WineHQ.

Further, do I need to register there to download? The BBO entry there doesn't seem to have a download link, just info.

Maybe someone using Ubuntu can say where to put the symbol.ttf file.

About installing Wine: Generally on Ubuntu (or any Linux distribution), before installing some software, you should first check whether the software is available in one of the "official software channels". See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine. (But if you have already installed the WineHQ version, that is ok too).

As far as installing BBO goes:

1. Go to online.bridgebase.com and "download the BBO software". Choose "Save File" when asked what to do with the file after clicking on the download link.

2. Assuming you are using Firefox, it will save the file to the Desktop folder. Start a terminal window, do "cd Desktop", then "wine bbo_setup.exe". This will start the BBO windows installer under wine.

3. After the installer has run, BBO should be installed in the wine subdirectory. For me, that is

~/.wine/Bridge Base Online/ (where ~ is my home directory). You should be able to start BBO by typing "wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Bridge\ Base\ Online/NetBridgeVu.exe" in the terminal.
