Old York
1) 4♥ showing game values opposite a minimum response (3♥ may describe your hand better - 5 losers)2) PassYour partner had the opportunity to bid 4♣ over 3♠, so you seem to have no source of extra tricks. Also, your partner's forced response of 2♥ was limited Tony
ArtK78
[hv=d=n&v=n&s=sakxhakqxxdaxxcqx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Sitting south: pass - 1♠ - dbl - pass2♥ - 3♦ - dbl - 3♠4♥ - pass - ? I made a takeout double of 1♠, intending to bid hearts at some level to show a super hand too good to overcall hearts. Partner surprises by bidding 2♥. Now RHO introduces his diamond suit and I doubled??? To me, the double of 3♦ is for penalties. If that is your understanding, why would you want to defend 3♦x? Bidding 4♥ immediately is an underbid. It could be based on a very good hand with 5 hearts, or just great power with 4 hearts. Partner is unlikely to have less than 4 hearts for his 2♥ call - he would be more likely to bid a minor suit if he were forced to bid a 3 card suit (yes, there are some real problem hands, like xxxxxx xxx xx xx, on which he might not pass 1♠x and 2♥ looks like the least of evils, but I am not going to play him for that). I would bid 4♥ with this hand if one of my hearts were in another suit. With almost game in hand and AKQxx of hearts, the hand is too good for merely a 4♥ call. I would bid 3♠ to see if I can get any signs of life out of pard. Who knows? Maybe he holds xx xxxx xx AKxxx. We would have to be very unlucky not to win 12 tricks opposite that dummy.
