1. Because you don't have an opening bid?

2. Transfer to hearts and bid clubs, or transfer to hearts and bid 4NT (invitational).

1. You can devalue this because of the doubleton QJ, but I think it's a matter of style whether to open this or not... I would open it playing precision, but pass playing Standard.

2. Transfer followed by 4, which is not the G word.

Hi,

#1 Opening 1H is an option, simplifies certain things, espesially

if you happen to play with a stranger.

You have a 5 card major, 2 Aces and no rebid problem, so

if you play standart american a 1H opening wont lead to

problems often, but will quite often avoid one.

But in my regular partnership, I would pass, since we agreed

to open sound.

#2 3NT.

If partner bids 4H, you can make a move toward 6H, but otherwise

be happy to play 3NT.

Partially it depends on system, if 2NT is 20-21, you have at best

32 between you, no gurantee of a fit, and it may be hard to stop

below the 6 level, if you make a move now.

And partner did not super accept the transfer, so wont have a 4

card heart suit very often (or 3 card support and a super max.).

With kind regards

Marlowe

I would open, personally, but I open light. The factor against opening is that QJ tight should probably be devalued somewhat. Not sure how much. Against that, though, is the fact that the 10 is with an Ace and gets no HCP value, which is a devaluing, the fact that Aces are devalued already when assigning them a mere 4 HCP each (especially when possessed in the long suits), and the fact that I have good, expected defense.

After passing and hearing 2NT, transfer and then bid 4. The problem, though, is that this is not a slam try by a passed hand. It is a descriptive bid. You have to trust partner to make the slam try. Partner, if he thinks any "20-21" is the same "20-21," will not know when to properly accept a slam try if you made one, so he won't make a slam try. However, if your partner has skills, he will already have made some slam tries over the transfer, will make a slam try of 4 if he accepts hearts, or will make a slam try of 4 if he accepts clubs. THEN, you ACCEPT.
