How to open 6 clubs as a preempt

Recommended Posts

Preempting is really a function of position, vulnerability and partnership style.

Personally, I tend not to pre-empt with any hand that qualifies for the rule of 19* in first seat, for instance, so I would open quite a few 10-count with AKxxxx in clubs 1. At different vulnerabilities and positions this changes, but it's really something to agree with your regular partners.

Since I learned bridge (2003), at least, I'd say 6-card preempts were the norm, not the exceptions.

I have always thought it's a terrible idea to open a slam as a preempt. But I have only seen it happen once. At neither vul, they went for 800 into the opponents' game.

Edit: lol sorry, misunderstood the thread title.

Depends on Vulerability, Quality of the Hand, Position, etc...

In first seat, I would pre-empt xx xx Axx KJTxxx or something. However, in 2nd seat vulnerable, I wouldn't pre-empt xx Qx Qxx KJxxxx. Generally however, 3 minor pre-empts don't always promise 7, for this exact reason.
