Hmmmmmmm,

Fred stated in another thread that "there are sound business reasons for us to

take this initiative".

This means as a company, BridgeBase staff feels that it is in their financial best interest to develop such and product. I have wondered to myself if Fred is a not a much better bridgeplayer and humaterian than he is a businessman. He has my favorite site on the internet, and yet doesn't seem to be making much money off of me. Any business idea he can come up wth that will help keep the BBO site on line and open should be encouraged. Will it work? Who knows, but it is surely worth an attempt, and I hope it indeed turns out to be a sucessful busniness decision.

I didn't vote. I feel that its Fred/Uday/Sheri's choice what they spend their time/energies/money on. Agree with Ben that they are super nice!

If translation of BBO into other major languages can help with some revenues, then I'm all for it! I know for sure it'll be great for countries like China. (Consideration is that less people are able to play online so easily and freely, but when they do, it'll be much friendlier if they can see instructions and content in chinese.)

Anyways, I'll for letting Fred and Uday do what they think is best. :D

I'm not voting on this one. I also feel it is Fred's decision as to how he allocates BBO staff resources. However I must say that BBO's apparent lack of commercial success (difficulty in attracting sponsors) has often been seen before where a brilliant technical product does not succeed as a business.

I think Fred should be devoting some time in finding a good marketing consultant to get Business interested while Fred concentrates on his specialisms. After all, the Cavendish was awash with big bucks but not much of it seems to have come the way of BBO - but how could it really, with Fred as one of the players.

I voted - though not sure I should have (yes, of course it's Fred's and Uday's decision!), not sure I am in the right category to be asked (because I speak English and do not need the translation) and last but not least - the question that is maybe just as important: "will you volunteer to hep with the translation into your own language".

Maybe Uday can be spared some programming - there are free software products that can be used for localisation; volunteers can download and take it from there. Whatever you decide, guys - woiuld be happy to help. Keep the great work but pls be selfish from time to time - it's healthier! :D

I voted "I don't care". The English works out just fine, but if they realy want to put all their energy into translating the program, I don't have any problem with that. Perhaps I'll even help if I can ;)

I voted "no".

The popularity and technical superiority of BBO place it in a good position to excell in the online bridge world. While Fred/Sherry/Uday are generous to a fault, they need to realize some profit from this venture and should be given the breathing space to focus on this facet of BBO. The long term availability and viability of the site should be a higher priority.

Having been party to several self owned, home grown family type businesses, my family learned thru trial and error that a short term plan, a 5 year plan, and a willingness to mix the stuff we didn't enjoy doing with the stuff we were good at were all critical to success. There was never any shortage of ways to improve our product, but sometimes the interesting R&D stuff had to take a back seat to being profitable.

The translation capability is a wonderful idea, however, it IS a major undertaking and could probably wait for a bit.

Frosty ;)
