JLOL
4H does not promise this good of a hand, but I see no other reasonable bid.
jdonn
I think 4♥ promises at least nearly this good of a hand. I bid it now not because I think we belong in hearts, but because I think it will let partner essentially place us in the right contract (or 4NT if 3NT was the 'right' contract) right now. gnasher
I think partner's upper limit is about 15, and he shouldn't have either five hearts or good support for a minor. In that case, 4♥ isn't an overbid, and it might even get us too high. Partner might go down in 4NT with something like KJxx Axxx Jx Axx. What are we hoping for when we bid 4♥? KQxx Axxx Kx QJ10 is a good slam; so is KJx Axxx Q10x Axx. However, both of these are well-fitting maxima. Move either of those tens to the other minor and slam becomes rather worse, but partner will probably still insist on slam. I think it's close between 4♥ and pass. I'd pass. Edit: On reflection, I don't think it's close. That singleton ace is horrible, and I think pass is clear. whereagles
Pard's got 44 majors and 13-15. Are we supposed to move on with a max of 32 hcp and possible misfit? Pass.
andy_h
I think partner's got a junky 13 typically 44 or 34 in the majors. My minor suits aren't that great as slam seems unlikely so I will rest in 3NT. Partner shouldn't have decent fit for one of the minors with decent controls. helene_t
Maybe stupid question, but if p would need some 18 points for a quantitative 4NT, can't he have up to 17 now? Or would a 16-18 hand go via FSF or something? My first thought was 4NT, but 4♥ is better.
mtvesuvius
I'm gonna pass. Give partner bad ♥ spots, and 4♥ and maybe even 4NT is bad. I think that we aren't moving to slam, despite my maximum, so I think that 4♥ may even get us too high. Admittedly, opposite Kxxx ATxx KQx Qx slam is excellent, but I just think that's too bid of a risk to take, seeing as partner will probably still move with KQxx Axxx Qx QJx, making it a bad slam... Phil
On the record for 4N. 4♥ gets partner to really downgrade the ♠K and we don't want that. I think we can back into hearts if we need to.
