Yuck. IMO I have too much for 1NT, too miserable for 3 and no stopper... I'll opt for 2NT, although I'm admittedly very close to bidding 3.

Too much for 1N? What do you think 1N shows? I play it shows 8-11. As I'm on the upper end, I don't mind lying about a stopper.

2 is wrong on two levels - I'd like better clubs, and I'm about a Q too heavy.

2N is an overbid.

3 is putrid.

I'd have bid 2, but I'm guessing I'm alone in not making this non-GF?

In most expert standard treatments of which I am aware, a cuebid advance of a takeout double establishes a force until the earlier of game or the bid and raise of a suit. Thus, bidding 2 effectively IS a gf.. the only exception is that you can play 4minor... and that isn't a good idea on this hand.

As for the response.. I play 1N as 8-10, but I also look at my hand rather than robotically counting points. This is an ugly hand, such that for notrump purposes it is no more than 10.

1N is ok, since if partner passes we can expect to lose the first 5 spades and maybe one in the wash, and then make 7 tricks on power. But if we bid 2N, our partner will and should aggressively bid 3N since when we have 8 tricks we often have 9 when doubler has any extras, if only due to the declarer advantage when he can place virtually all the high cards. Furthermore, while it is now reasonably common to bid 1N without a stopper, I don't know any pair who extend that treatment to 2N :)

3♣.

Even though this does look ugly , when my partner is off-shape, he will usually have extra strength, so will bid again over 3♣.

If we do belong in 3NT I think we will have more chance of getting there if I bid 3♣ now, and it will be rightsided.
