Recommended Posts

NV vs V at IMPs, you hold:

K9

AKxx

Axx

AQ9x

(1) - Pass - (2) - X

(Pass) - 3 - (Pass) - ?

You have not discussed Lehbensohl in this sequence...

Han and Jason, wait to ridicule me until there are a few replies

When the opponents are both bidding constructively, and I have 20 HCP, I generally expect close to a Yarborough in partner's hand. Therefore, I bid very conservatively, since my hand is end-played at just about every trick. It's still right to double, but just pass whatever partner bids. His hand may take a few trump tricks, but don't count on it for anything else.

3NT on this hand is extremely optimistic. Not only does it require him to have more strength than he rates to have, it has to be in a specific suit and he has to have extra length there. And even if partner has Kxxxx you still need to score the K for your 9th trick, which requires RHO to hold the A or LHO to lead away from it, even after you've warned him during the bidding that you hold the card.

True, although I expect that they usually have compensating shape, in which case I'll likely run into bad breaks, or they may even get a defensive cross-ruff going.

Just because I have 20 HCP is no reason to assume the opponents are bidding just because they have 13 cards.
