Hi:

4H.

Partner is giving you a choice of contracts "since" you have a 3 card H raise.

The 3H bid in this auction suggests 5, so you have an easy 4H bid now.

Regards,

Robert

We could have made a support double, so partner should play us for 4.

4.

I agree with Souths bidding, but I don't know about North yet.

All in all it looks like a double fit situation and 3 could very well make, so North does well to compete.

Worse than -100 would be quite unlucky.

This is kind of a humorous situation. I have seen this before, many times.

The hand may well make four of anything. Even if 4 can be set a trick, we might not double, so defending 4 might yield a very uncomfortable +100.

If we bid 4, we expect to fail, but this might just make. The opponents probably will see the risk of -420 and take the insurance out anyway.

So, bidding 4 probably yields a nervous +100 but might yield a very unfortunate -620.

4, on the other hand, may well be the best contract. If 4 makes, we score +130, which beats +100 for setting 4 undoubled, wih much less stress. Plus, the opponents have a problem. If they sacrifice over 4, they risk -500 against a partscore.

Hence, passing 4 in this sequence seems to often yield the best actual score in a real world.

Personally I think 4 is an impossible bid for partner, since he should know I would always bid 4 over it and play for game. Ken I'm really not worried about the opponents saving since our auction sounds like we won't make and the vul is unfavorable. In fact having not bid game vul already they would be nuts to save regardless of their hands.

Disagree with the bidding so far, but I'd have to see partner's hand to know which bid I disagree with.

I think North should bid 3 over 2. That shows the double fit and invitational values. This takes North off a guess over 3. South can then bid 4 over 3 as a save / possible make.

I don't agree with partner's 3. Maybe 3, but inviting on this hand when we have a third of our values wasted is not a good idea. 4 is the bid over 4, but I bet hearts were 4-1, weren't they?
