Defense to multi-landy

Versus 1NT (2 majors):

Dbl = Strong

2 =

2M = Stopper in this suit, not in the other

2NT = Minors

Versus 1NT (2 one major):

Dbl = TO of

2M = Natural

2NT = Lebensohl assuming

Mine is "system on", with some subtleties.

OVER 2 CLUBS (majors)

1NT (2) ..??

X = "Stayman", i.e. penalty in one (or both) majors.

2/ = transfer (into opponent's suit, yes!!). Shows a GOOD 5 or 6 carder, not afraid to play in the suit, even if RHO has 4 of them. With 5 not-so-hot cards, it's better to use "Stayman".

2+ = system on.

In the unlikely event that 2 shows a 55 ALL THE TIME, then 2 becomes natural (Lebenshol style) and 2M show stoppers.

OVER 2 DIAMONDS (multicolor style)

1NT (2) ..??

Play whatever you usually play over a multi 2.

I'm sure this won't be popular but I like 1N 2C 2N to play. Hamman convinced me it's worth it to not let LHO get a bid in. You have 2H and 2S anyways, so I use 2H as GF with the minors and 2S as competitive with the minors.

I think it would be better to have 2NT competitive with minors and 2 a balanced invite. But it's probably a minor point. I honestly never thought about 2NT natural.

I thought the point was that after an auction like 1NT-(2)-3NT the person with majors has to guess which one to lead. He's going to get this wrong at least some percentage of the time.

So it's nice to avoid sequences that give the opponent in 4th chair the chance to bid a major at the two-level or to double a major suit bid for the lead. This would seem to be a big advantage to playing 2NT natural, although defining it as to play rather than natural invite might be going a bit far.

A fair percentage of the minor suit hands are going to end in a minor suit contract anyway, so the lead directional info is of less importance.

I assume 3m is forcing, and with a competitive hand with one minor you have to bid 2D or pass for now?

2N to play wouldn't have occurred to me in a million years, but I am starting to like it.

Yeah, I'd play basically ACBL multi-defense 1 + leb so X is TO of spades, 2 is TO of hearts, and 2+ is leb. Pass and then X is penalty.

Losing the ability to bid a natural 2H seems like a HUGE loss.

I prefer X is values, 2H/2S nat, 2N inv+ with clubs or to play in 3D, 3C inv+ diamonds, 3D inv+ hearts, 3H inv+ spades, 3S minors.

So if you have a stayman hand you start with double and then you're in a forcing pass so can sort it out pretty easily.

I believe the point of a natural 2NT is to leave LHO in the dark as to

1. Should I compete in 3M or not?

2. If I leave 2NT in, what's the best lead?

If you mutter about it for a while, 2NT is probably way more annoying than you'd think. Especially at match points.

I certainly wouldn't have come up with it :)
