Suppose N opens 1 and E bids 2. Continue the auction, you subbed in for all four players.

Also what am I missing, why is everyone saying 4 is down?

doesn't it depend on who has the 8 of hearts, whether 4H makes or not?

I would definitely be tempted to reopen with 3H with such a strong player, but since partner is a lock to have a trap pass of diamonds I think 2H is fine.

I've never thought about what a 3H re-opening should show. I think I'd like a slightly better hand.

I think you still make by shortening your hand twice, having taken 6 black tricks, two ruffs in hand, and the A (and lost one diamond trick), you have JTx and RHO KQ9, and you can make one trick even though the lead is in your hand.

If we play trumps by leading to the ace and leading back to JT, we are going to lose two trumps and a diamond. Am I missing something?

Sure does look like 4 will make easily. The opponents can't force declarer, so declarer has time to pull trump and win 10 tricks.

I don't understand why Frances is playing in 4 instead of 4.

My auction is identical to Helene's. I think this is fairly normal and I'd be surprised to see something different.

And 4 should surely make?
