a nice hand

Recommended Posts

I'd open 1 in any system at matchpoints unless my partner is...

IMPs it's closer. Would depend on my mood. Precision obv 1 any context. Maybe this hand is 'good' enough that poor 1st seat IMP opening warnings don't really need to be heeded. I'm not sure.

What is your reasoning here? I would guess the preempt probably does all right on the majority of hands making it a decent matchpoint bid, but the risk of missing a vulnerable game might persuade me to pass or open 1H at imps.

I would open 1. I open at the one level nearly all hands with at least 26 Zars, and this one has exactly that many.... (search for Zar points if you are unfamiliar).

1 I guess, since the spots are good and the shape is awkward to get across after passing. This is a bit lighter than my minimum generally is though. I think 2 is very bad with QJTx of spades and the ace of hearts.

I like 1H with this. It is right on the border between Pass and 1H, but never 2H.

Opening 2H will mislead partner who does not expect a four-card spade suit and a singleton on the side. If the spades were xxxx, I might overlook that if the hand otherwise qualifies for a weak two.

Favorite is canape. That makes this an easy 1 opening.

Second favorite 2/1 GF. 1 in that event.

I'm not as enthused in 2/1 GF, for one obscure reason. I fear (slightly) ending in spades on a 4-3 rather than hearts on a 6-1 when partner has a weak hand with 3145/3154 and bids a practical 1; but, I can live with that.

What is your favourite system and what do you bid with this hand?

Two suited preempts, where 2 shows a weak two bid, 4-9ish, with 4+ and 5+. B)

(For the regular 2 preempts, we have to pass, open 1 light in precision, or open 3 if the colors and the hand merit)

This came up in bidding practice. I forced to game on a median 13 count but 4 was makable. Ken, do you need to open 1 on 4-6 in the majors in canape?

No. You could opt to treat the hand as a one-suited major hand if you want. If the suits were 6/4, then you could predict a 1-P-1NT-P-??? problem and not want to rebid 2 for some reason, but the reason eludes me. With 4/6, you have no predictable problems. But, I suppose some hand with 6 solid hearts, four little spades, and nothing else makes some sense. I just would open 1 anyway, though.

The more I think about this, though, the problem may be greater in canape than I first thought. 1...2 sounds like 4+/5+, of course. However, there is a possibility that the partnership bids this way with 5/5 in some situations, which muddies the meaning of the heart rebid somewhat. If so, then there might be a case-specific problem for some pairs playing canape, where opening and rebidding the hearts might make more sense than otherwise, perhaps with some problematic range of hand.
