whereagles
IMPs pairs, expert pard, 2/1. ♠ Kxx♥ 9x♦ KQT9x♣ AKx You pard1♦ 1♥1NT 2♠2NT 3♥..?? 1NT = 15-172♠ = natural, but undiscussed. You're playing checkback, btw. 1. What do you think pard has?2. Your bid?
JLOL
Whatever he has I would bid 3N.
pirate22
so ply with an expert and no discussion your pard has a good hand all he knows is so far is you have a 4 card diam suit --i would bid 4 clubs now,and your pard will sort it out-u may have slam on in Diamonds -maybe htsregards-------- p.s. you have 15 points and your pard assumes you have 14 points only, and is still being constructive with 2 spades. Winstonm
Why didn't I open 1N?
neilkaz
Why didn't I open 1N? We'll let our OP tell us if he was playing weak NT. I am almost certain that he means the 1NT rebid shows 15-17 so he was playing 12-14 NT. Hmm playing checkback... my my...is PD showing 6-5 or 7-5 on this sequence ? If he's 6-5..can 3NT play worse than 4♠ ?.. well maybe..but if he has only 4♠ I'll shoot myself if I bid 4♠ and he goes set. 3NT for me..also...PD is not barred from bidding again. We have no agreements..I hate to guess.

jdonn
1NT showed a balanced hand. 2NT denied support for either major. And now 3NT shows both minors very well stopped. Bridge can be so easy sometimes.
whereagles
I am almost certain that he means the 1NT rebid shows 15-17 so he was playing 12-14 NT. That is correct. A direct 1NT would be weak 12-14.
Phil
I think 3N is far from obvious. We've already denied 4♠ or 3♥. Have I categorically denied a stiff heart (is a 3=1=5=4 OK for a 1N rebid?). Presumably pard is 4-6, but didn't rebid 4♥ over 1N. There's two concerns here: pard has a broken heart suit: AxxxAJxxxxxxx On a club lead (even a spade lead), 3N has problems. 4♥ seems much simpler. Or, pard's hearts are really good: QxxxKQJxxxxxx 3N looks hopeless on a club out. 4♥ has chances. 3N is great if pard has the ♦J / ♦A, or the ♣Q. If I have denied a heart singleton (and I doubt it affects his evaluation much), I'm going to try 3♠. This allows pard to back into 3N with stuff in the minors, or to still try 4♥. hanp
I don't have a stiff heart on this auction. Maybe on a very rare occasion (weak minors, HCP in majors) but then I wouldn't be bidding 3NT now.
JLOL
Why is partner going to play 3N either of those hands Phil?
Phil
Why is partner going to play 3N either of those hands Phil? Good question, but if pard has described a 6-4, he might pass under the guise that he has described his hand. Take: Axxx, AJxxxx, x, xx. Wouldn't we want to play 3N opposite that with Qxx, xx, AQJx, AKQT?
whereagles
Thanks all for the replies. I'd say 3NT seems a pretty good description of the hand. Pard (me) had ATxxAQJ8xxJQx and was trying for slam. The funny thing is opener, over 3♥... passed! He later argued I could have used checkback to create a force, so my bidding would be non forcing. I obviously dismissed his claims as rubbish... :)
