tjtalent
I would appreciate comments from teachers as to how you have effectively used BBO for teaching individuals or groups while online. I have not found any guidance in the BBO help section. Also, have you been able to find ways to use BBO screenshots or other means to assist in teaching when in a location without internet access? Thank you!
Rain
Do you want tips for using teaching tables, or tips from teachers about how best to use BBO to teach students? I can give the former, but not the latter.
tjtalent
Either would be helpful. Thank you for sharing information on using the teaching tables.
Rain
Teaching table summarised: Start a new table, choose Teaching as the option. At a teaching table, the table host has absolute control. When he leaves table, table closes. He can sit in all 4 seats to control every seat's cards, he can undo/claim. Best thing you can do as a host is, you can create your own deals to be uploaded. To do this, click on the MOVIE icon and start inputting whatever deals you had planned for the lesson. In the web version of BBO, you have another powerful tool. You can specify some deal parameters (want to practise 1NT responses? Have south always get 1NT types of hands, north gets various types of responses based on whatever you want to practise) and just let the software deal. Hope this helps. inquiry
You don't need screen shots to teach in areas where there is no internet connectivity. Simply save the hands you want to use, and then load them into the netbridgevu.exe version of the program. Of course, the play and bidding from then will be shown, unless you know how to edit the lin file.
tjtalent
Thank you for your comments. How do I download the netbridgevu.exe version of BBO?
Rain
Download it here: http://online.bridgebase.com/intro/install...ide_for_bbo.php But the web BBO version is highly recommended instead - powerful tools (deal generator) only available there. Of course it is difficult to use the web BBO version in places without internet connectivity as the original poster mentioned. :D I do like the new web BBO version now better than the netbridgevu version, but I use netbridgevu a lot for off line stuff. TwstofLime
Rain--Thanks for your summary on teaching tables and thanks VERY much for the information on the web-version capability of specifying deal parameters. That is super!
pdmunro
Just a suggestion If just teaching one person, how about having that person set up a GIB table on BBO, where the player has GIB robots playing in the other 3 seats. The price is very reasonable. Then kibitz the player, setting your profile so that you can see only your student's hand, not all four hands. Now you can discuss their cards, their possible bids and their play strategy. Your chat might be "text chat", or better yet "voice chat", using, say, MS Messenger. paulg
I blogged a simple way to generate hands suitable for high-level competitive bidding problems. Although it was for partnership bidding, it all works just the same in a teaching table on the WEB client. More details at Competitive Bidding Practice on BBO. I also spent five years running a weekly group session in the BIL using the teaching tables. Some sessions I would generate hands for a specific topic but using just a random set of hands always worked well. My format was to have four people play four hands. I'd let them play out a hand, and then we'd discuss what happened, options they did or should have considered. The kibitzers were encouraged to be part of the discussion too. After the four hands we'd get a new set of players. Play was never fast, due to the amount of discussion, but it didn't seem to matter.
