Tough one.

I just pass. If they make it then maybe we lose 5 or it's normal. Move on.

Give me some black-suit spots and I'll reconsider.

If partner is sitting over there with a penalty double maybe he should have just bid 3NT at these colors rather than go for win (maybe) 5.

Oops. I didn't notice we we're 4th seat. Lol. Forget what I said about possible holdings from partner.

One of the reasons for playing a weak NT is to put your opponents in a situation that they are not used to dealing with. For some reason, your LHO has decided to bid 3 after both he and his partner have passed. I am hoping that this is not a wise decision.

One thing I do know is that this is not likely to be our hand at the 3 level.

I pass.

I know some fine card players who double at mps. I think they also double at imps, but the players I am thinking of are far better mp players than they are imp players, and this type of hand is the reason: they are hyper-aggressive... getting 200 or 500 3 times gets 3 tops, while going -670 or -800 once is a zero. The imp odds are a little different :P

I was West. South at my table reopened with a double and North bid the cold 5. I'm rather shocked that North didn't open 2 Precision OR negative double 3. I was telling some people how I got "fixed" on this hand, and I was getting suggestions that double was a reasonable call -- after all both opponents are passed hands.

Anyway I thought the double was pretty crazy -- posted it here to see what people thought.

Incidentally -- what would people do with the West hand in 1st seat? I thought bidding 3 was out since it was too likely we would miss a cold major or 3NT game. I considered a 1 opening.

Whether I opened 3D or 1D would depend on my partnership style, but I hate pass. In most partnerships I would open 3D and not be worried about missing 3N. Sure I would be worried because my hand was suitable for a major, but I think 3D is a lot less flawed than pass.

Prefer opening 3. Note that 33 in the majors is only bad if pard has like 14-16 hcp with 5 major (with more, he bids 3M over 3).

On the plus side, 3 totally blocks out what seems to be opps' long suit (clubs), with them having little chance to bid 3NT (that would require, say, Qxx from LHO or Qxxx from RHO - possible, but not that common).
