mtvesuvius
NV vs V at IMPs you hold: ♠xx♥------♦KQ9xxxx♣KJxx You're the dealer, your bid?
MarkDean
Four for me. Five feels a bit too rich, and three leaves LHO a convenient 4D bid if he happens to have both majors. Plus, I would bid 3 with a lot less offense at these colors (like if one of my diamonds was a heart). I am not close to opening 1 with a minor-oriented hand and little defense. bill1157
I like 2♦. Bill
Gerben42
5♦ for me.
jdaming
I agree with 5. Opening 1 or 2 I think is crazy. 1 promises much more on defence. 2 does nothing, it doesn't describe our hand well it doesn't describe our strength well, it doesn't prempt the opponents (much) and it even does a horrible job at showing our trick taking abilities. I think 5 rates to be right in that it exludes the opponenets from finding 4 of a major (many play takeout of 4♦) and opposite a avg/avg+ partner gives us a decent chance of making it. Apollo81
I don't like the suit for 5, but between the vulnerability, seating, and the heart void, I'm persuaded. Change any one of these things and I wouldn't open 5.
kfay
I'd content myself with 4 probably. Upon reading the responses I wish I'd bid 5. Not really a compelling reason not to. But 4 is undoubtedly what I'd bid ATT.
JLOL
Upon reading the responses I wish I'd bid 5. Not really a compelling reason not to. Umm your diamonds are KQ9xxxx. Has the world gone mad?
Cascade
4♦ Even at these colours 5♦ needs more than this for me.
mikeh
I don't have a 4♦ bid in my arsenal (I use it for a solid suit major opening, with 4♣ a non-solid major: a form of namyats) and I really don't like 5minor here... the suit is too short/weak, and I have too much defence. I would open 3N... which conventionally shows a 4 minor hand (I know that it is not as theoretically sound as having a 4minor but I like the modified namyats too much to change)
jdonn
4♦. Yes the 5♦ bidders are mad IMO. The suit is very shoddy.
ArtK78
5♦ at IMPs? I don't think so. I know some who would open 5♦ at matchpoints, but I am not among them. 4♦ is fine.
EricK
4m is my favourite pre-empt and I look for sensible opportunities to use it as much as possible. Here is an opportunity, so 4♦ for me.

gnasher
I'd rather open 5 than 4. Even madmen receive a game bonus. I think it's a 1♦ bid though.

whereagles
4♦ for me. Playing strength is adequate, despite not-so-hot trumps. 5♦ is an overkill (pard may be lurking with majors) and 1 is.. well.. not really reflecitve of my shape and strength.
