how would you bid?

This came up in Aussie match I was watching. How would you bid this in your partnership? Would anyone playing SAYC or 2/1 not open 2 with the S hand? Does that help?

FWIW, N/S ended up in 6NT, which has no play since RHO holds Qxx. (Well, almost no play. If LHO leads a away from the K, you can win the J and run the J. )

Where would your partnership end up?

For one of my favorite partnerships, this would be my auction:

1 - 1 | 16+ Any; 0-8 HCP Any

1 - 1NT | 19+ Any; 6-8 HCP with at least 6-5 in two suits

2 - 2 | Relay Asking; 6+!s and 5+ of another suit

2NT - 3 | Asking 2nd Suit; 6+ 5+

4 - 5 | Minorwood 1430; 3 or 0 with a Useful Void

5NT - 6 | Asking Where the Void is; void

7 - Pass | Guessing about the Queen of trump, which is what I dislike about my auction, but...

I play Modify Precision with my regular pd.

Our auction :

1 -- 1 // 17+ ; 5+cards,GF

1NT -- 2 // relay ; 2nd suit.

2NT -- 3 // relay ; minimum.

3 -- 3 //relay ; 5-5 or more

3 -- 4 // relay ; 6+ 5-

4NT -- 5 // Blackwood

6

Dangerous 7 when without trump Q (9 cards trump only)?

If pd showing 6 cards , 7 I will. :(

Hi,

Playing Benjamin, i.e. we can stop in 2H if p is dead,

and 2/1, it is close, but most likely I would go with 1H,

partner will respond with a fit and 3-4HCP, so missing

game is not a big issue. So

1H - 1S

3D - 4D (1)

4H (2) - 4S (2)

4NT (3) - 5C (3)

6D (4)

(1) natural, forward going

(2) cue

(3) RKCB, 0 or 3 KC

(4) thats it

With kind regards

Marlowe

4 - 5 | Minorwood 1430; 3 or 0 with a Useful Void

It's a very effective way to show this exactly type of hand, however I agree this is WAY over "0-8"

The Aussie auction went something like this, I think:

2 3 (transfer, promising 7 solid spades)

3 4 (no doubt intended as a cue, but...)

6 6

6NT all pass

One of the commentators observed that if you spend much time practicing for hands like this, you're wasting your time. There's no good way to bid 7-5 freaks especially opposite a 2 opener.

I like the transfer over 2 showing the solid suit. After P's forced 3 response I'd like to think I'd have justed blasted 6 , but I might have tried 5 . I really have no idea how P would take that.

I don't often reply to problems you post both hands and say "how do we bid to the correct contract" because it's too easy to construct auctions.

But....

I wouldn't open 2C, I would open 1H.

A possible auction is

1H - 4S

6S

which has the advantage of brevity.

Another possible auction is

1H - 1S

3D - and North won't be kept out of slam now, although it might be in diamonds

I also wouldn't open 2, and I like both of Frances' suggestions

All kinds of auctions are possible, but I cannot imagine 6NT as the final contract. If South bid 6NT at any point in any plausible auction, as North I'd bid an angry 7 and make partner pick the grand.

with the south hand open 1 ht-if pard cannot respond you are well out of it,even if pard passes opps will bid---------but in reality pard will bid 1 spade-now bid 3 diamonds-pard a bit interested now---by agreement 4cl is now 4th suit forcing-you will now be in 6 diamonds-or 6 spades regards
