Simple question

Vulnerable against not, IMPs ("friendly" match between two teams of 16)

[hv=d=e&v=n&s=sk10652hk104dk6ckq3]133|100|Scoring: IMP

3 ?[/hv]

RHO opens 3C

What is your call?

I also pass, we need more shape/strenght to act somehow.

Agree with Harald on everything except that I like 3NT over reopening double, it sometimes avoids a clubb ruff and an awful break, and I think we will often have combined overstrenght to justify it.

pass. Yes, this hand yearns to bid, and it wouldn't surprise me to find that bidding was the winner. However: short, weak spade suit, too many clubs, and not enough Aces add up to a maximum pass.

I'm passing over 3 with this aceless hand and a not_too_good suit. Hopefully, partner is able to balance; over double I bid 4, over 3 => 3NT, 3M I raise.

I say hopefully partner is not able to balance. I want the beginner 3 bidder at the other table to pay. :)

Yes, agree on that.

Maybe this is less interesting than I thought. Or maybe the vehement opinionistas got there first...

If you bid 3S, you go two off in 5S

If you pass, and bid 4S over partner's double, you go one off in 4S

If you pass, and bid 3NT over partner's double, you make either +660 or +690

If you overcall 3NT, you make either +660, +690 or go off in 6NT if partner gets too enthusiastic.

Partner has

AQJ

QJ9

AQ9xx

xx

and hearts are 6-1, clubs are 7-1

I went for the pass then 3NT route, but I was nervous this might miss a slam. I thought it was very close to a 3NT overcall the first round but the lack of aces put me off.

We were the only pair not in spades.

Bidding directly over 3C with this hand is a death wish, with 3S leading the pack of the " just try and beat me 1100" camp. When partner dbles in the bal seat (10+) I do not feel that 4S could ever be better than 3N really, those S take tricks in NT also.

At first I considered 4C if partner dbled and then 4S, but the club length does not argue for playing in S.
