Defense against SUCTION

Recommended Posts

Normally, suction show either the suit above, or the 2 suits below. In this case / +.

My advice is to just ignore they bid and play your usual schemes. Or Double a lot to let them show what they have. After that, pick up the auction from there. Suction at low levels isn't a really big problem imo, especially if it's done without much distribution (so opps can't preempt heavily).

Assuming that the suit bid is one that the bidder cannot have (which is normal in Suction) you can use double as a balanced hand with power, and otherwise just ignore the bid and bid naturally.

You need some decent agreements in place as the overcallers partner will be preempting to the level of fit. You may find the auction is quickly at the 3 level with opps in a known 9 or 10 card fit, from where it is difficult to judge 3N or x for pen or game in a strain. Slam hands are less tricky funnily enough. Since the suit is not held: you have double and NT available as distinctly different meanings, and also 2, if 1 rarely natural.

I like playing against Suction strictly because it's much rarer to be able to jump to 3fit. You need a fit for two suits to pull it off, and frequently the second suit is at the 4 level, so it had better be a GOOD fit.

As I have said before, I want my suits to be known; the ambiguity doesn't hurt the clubbers as much as people think, but taking up space does. Strangely enough, I'm happier to be playing "ambiguous suits" vs a Polish/Swedish club, where more often than not, we're in a partscore battle (the system I use now is from one of B-Z's cards; I figure if they have a defence to Polish Club, it's probably been tested a bit. X=H, D=S; 1M, 1NT CRaSh, all bids 8-15.)
