w vs w, last round of a Swiss teams, playing for the second place (nothing of this really matters...), you hold:

ATxx

xx

AJxxxx

x

Bidding goes:

2* Pass 2* 3

Pass ???

2 is multi (weak in a Major, strong in NT) and 2 means P/C with preference to hearts. 3 by partner is natural. What do you bid?

I hope I have an agreement whether 3 shows a stopper or asks for a stopper.

Whatever my methods are, I make a try for 3 NT. When partner has no heart stopper, I go for 5 .

I think we should pretend that the opps have shown spades here (LHO would probably have bid 3 if that was his suit) so I make the cuebid of 3. Fortunately that is a reasonable bid even if partner doesn't assume opener to have spades.

Maybe 3 is an unlucky expert bid and I should just blast 5. Anyway, I am not going to pass 3NT or 4, we are going to play in diamonds.

I think you cuebid 3 and pull to show a good hand.

If 2 really means, pass 2 or bid 3 if you have hearts, when LHO does not bid 3, one should assume he has spades. Therefore, spades is either a Western Cue or a cue-bid clarified later.

I am never playing this in 3N, because if partner has a heart stopper, you have a good chance for slam in diamonds.

I am always bidding 4 over a 3 NT rebid. The most likely shape in RHO hand in the majors is 2-4, although 1-4 is possible. But partner should be able to evaluate his hand if he has a singleton or doubleton spade.

Which law enforces opener to clarify for you that he has the hearts?

When he passes 3 it is much more difficult for you to reach 3 NT, because you have NO cuebid avaiable. So I won't take it as given that he has hearts.

And when he gets you to blast 5 diamond on any given hand, then the overall win of passing will be much higher then the beneift from bidding 3 Hearts now.

Jan has some long notes on Multi defense. I wonder if she covers what 3M means here.

Not having firm agreements, 5 seems practical.

Would I really overcall 2M on KQJxxx and out? Without discussion, 3M should be natural.
