matmat
3N and 4C just seem like bad ideas. This has neither the playing strength nor the club suit to go that way. I think I squeak out a pass, but I wouldn't really be surprised if double works well on these hands.
whereagles
Pard's expectancy of 10 hcp should give me some play for 3NT. That's what I bid then.
hanp
Double.

gnasher
3NT. They're likely to have a seven-card suit at the vulnerability, making it more likely that I can keep LHO out of the game.
gwnn
pass: no, I have an opening hand and partner could have an opening hand with 3 spades 3NT: no, I am too weak. and I don't have a good enough stop. 4♣: what's the point??? X: whatever is left after discounting the bad choices is the good choice. X.
ArtK78
3NT: no, I am too weak. and I don't have a good enough stop. Too weak for 3NT? No, that isn't true. If you reverse your major suits then this would be a 3NT call if you were going to do anything but pass. After all, partner will not be able to bid 3NT if you double. Given that you only have Ax in spades, you have to choose between pass and double (4♣ on QTxxx is just too much). I would double.
gwnn
Fair enough, I meant to say that I'm too weak to bid 3NT on Ax, something that my actual post didn't reflect at all.
hanp
I don't think it isn't a question of being too weak or too strong. 3NT might be the only way to get to a making game. On the other hand, double could lead to a good 3SX or 4H or a 4m which is a little more modest but could still be the best spot.
shevek
This was the hand: [hv=d=n&v=b&n=skqjt932h94dq75c4&w=sa8hak5dj92cqt653&e=s654hjt62d643cak7&s=s7hq873dakt8cj982]399|300|Scoring: IMP3♠ - no - no - ?[/hv] 3♠ is 140 while double led to -200 in 4♥x.A brave 3NT nets 600. It's surprsing how often this works. Or perhaps the -800s don't get reported.
mikestar
For me, close between pass and 3NT. Definitely 3NT if we need a swing.
jdonn
Just another making or down 5 game.
