I have enough stuff in the other suits that partner won't need that much for 3NT to be right so I am inclined not to go beyond 3NT immediately. Never- at least not with a non passed partner.So, I am too strong for 3 club, even in this vul. and have too much fear to miss 3 NT while opening 4 ♣, so this is an easy 1 ♣ opening. I only hope that the opps stay out of our auction, but somehow they never seem to when I invite them in by opening 1♣ with sub-minimum high card and defensive values. kfay Posted March 12, 2009 Report Share Posted March 12, 2009 I think I would open 3♣ with this hand. I'm 2nd red. My hand is good for clubs and for NT. If partner can make 4M he'll probably bid it himself because he knows I'm not broke and if we can make 3N he'll definitely bid that. Phil Posted March 12, 2009 Author Report Share Posted March 12, 2009 I hate the "4♣ passes 3N" bromide, but it certainly applies here. 3N has too much potential with all of these bits and pieces. There are two reasonable ways to go about this: 3♣: If we didn't have the outside stuff, I would think this is unanimous. 1♣, then 2♣, then 3♣. While we aren't showing the 8th club, we aren't denying it either. Personally, I like 1♣ by a little.
