double is obvious, 1 NT looks insane.

I would pass now, my partner shows 3-4 spades and 0-7 HCPS.

Playing in the US, where his 1 can be stronger, I try 2 now and hope that partner understands what I am doing.

1 was from RHO not Partner.

Very good problem, although of course the double last round was automatic.

For me pass is not forcing. I've seen several hands lately where this has hurt me so perhaps it is better to play this as forcing. It will cost sometimes when partner is weak with long hearts, but maybe more often it will be very useful to determine whether we should defend or not.

If pass is indeed forcing then this is a clear pass I think.

If pass is not forcing then we have a problem. I am not as convinced as Roger that we shouldn't be defending, we have 5 tricks! Partner doesn't need much for 1SX to be a good score. On the other hand, partner will almost always pass my double and it does sound like the opponents have landed in some kind of fit: partner is unlikely to have 4 spades (though it is possible.)

If I do pass then partner will likely double with 3 spades and values, that would be a feast.

If I bid 1NT partner will probably expect more HCP but we probably have spades and hearts well stopped and diamonds are likely to bring in tricks. If partner raises us to 3NT then I expect good play. On the other hand, if partner is very weak (the kind of hand where 1S makes) then 1NT might not make and 2D could be a lot safer.

A direct 2D now does show extras (with a minimum and long diamonds we could have bd 2D last round) but it is a bit sick to rebid this suit, and I also think that it also suggests a weaker spade holding.

So I will also bid 1NT but I am not happy about it.

OK... So this part of the problem was obviously much harder... The full deal:

I bid 3 (A very bad bid now that I think about it... which was not so much fun to play...
