mtvesuvius
Nobody Vulnerable at IMPs you deal: ♠ KQx♥ A♦ Axxxxx♣ ATx 1♦ - (1♥) - P - (P)? I hope nobody tells me they would have opened 1/2NT, but I made a vote for that... If you voted for it, identify yourself so we can LOL you!
rogerclee
routine double
Cascade
Extra values and reasonable shape - its hard to imagine how a double can work out badly.
the hog
double. Wayne says it all.
mtvesuvius
ok... WTP double I thought... right? 1♦ - (1♥) - P - PX - (P) - P - (1♠)?
rogerclee
I would bid 1NT, in my experience hands like this (long minor) do better to declare than defend. To clarify, I'm bidding 1NT after I already doubled last round.
Codo
double is obvious, 1 NT looks insane. Rest editted due to Csabas sensible answer.
gwnn
double is obvious, 1 NT looks insane. I would pass now, my partner shows 3-4 spades and 0-7 HCPS. Playing in the US, where his 1 ♠ can be stronger, I try 2♦ now and hope that partner understands what I am doing. Kaffee für alle Leute! Codo
Aha, now I am awake, so partner has a penalty pass of 1 HEart. I try 2 NT, wouldn't I bid 1 NT with the same hand and an ace less?
helene_t
I think pass is forcing so I show a good hand by passing and then bidding 2♦ after partner's double.
whereagles
If you play that pass now is forcing, pass and pass pard's double. If you play that pass is non forcing (or you're not sure what you play), bid 1NT.
helene_t
Right, I must pass partner's double of course. I need some coffee, too.
Fluffy
double, would also double with 2263.
hanp
Very good problem, although of course the double last round was automatic. For me pass is not forcing. I've seen several hands lately where this has hurt me so perhaps it is better to play this as forcing. It will cost sometimes when partner is weak with long hearts, but maybe more often it will be very useful to determine whether we should defend or not. If pass is indeed forcing then this is a clear pass I think. If pass is not forcing then we have a problem. I am not as convinced as Roger that we shouldn't be defending, we have 5 tricks! Partner doesn't need much for 1SX to be a good score. On the other hand, partner will almost always pass my double and it does sound like the opponents have landed in some kind of fit: partner is unlikely to have 4 spades (though it is possible.) If I do pass then partner will likely double with 3 spades and values, that would be a feast. If I bid 1NT partner will probably expect more HCP but we probably have spades and hearts well stopped and diamonds are likely to bring in tricks. If partner raises us to 3NT then I expect good play. On the other hand, if partner is very weak (the kind of hand where 1S makes) then 1NT might not make and 2D could be a lot safer. A direct 2D now does show extras (with a minimum and long diamonds we could have bd 2D last round) but it is a bit sick to rebid this suit, and I also think that it also suggests a weaker spade holding. So I will also bid 1NT but I am not happy about it.
Fluffy
I think that after 1♠ our only options are pass and double, both have merit, I'd go with double again.
Apollo81
er, didn't notice the followup by the OP The first action is obviously double. The second action is much harder; I think I'd double again. Edited March 11, 2009 by Apollo81
mtvesuvius
OK... So this part of the problem was obviously much harder... The full deal: [hv=d=w&v=n&n=sa8hkj872dt3ckq93&w=skq2hada97652cat7&e=s653hqt96543dqcj2&s=sjt974hdkj84c8654]399|300|Scoring: IMPI bid 3♦ (A very bad bid now that I think about it... which was not so much fun to play...:P[/hv]
hanp
Partner will bid 2H if we bid 1NT, and I think partner should pass if we double 1S. Agree?
