Change the Course of History?

It's the 5th round of Sunday Swiss. Your team shot into 1st after rounds 1 and 2, but 3 and 4 didn't go well.

Here is the 1st board from round 5. The books have your opponents going on to win the tournament now but if you could go back and change what happened on this board maybe the fates would fall differently.

[hv=v=n&s=sakjxxhkdq10xcxxxx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

You open 1 in 1st seat (agree)....

when partner yells 'DIRECTOR!' and you look down to see that you are actually in 4th seat.

Opps aren't nice and decide not to accept the bid. So, partner being barred (for the entire auction), the bidding proceeds:

(1)-P-(1)-?

Well... can't change that now. But what do you do?

Edited: Keep in mind (Kaplan) that if you don't bid spades at some point the opponents will have rights later on that you might not like.

I don't open out of turn of course! :)

Provided that I did, I'll pass.

Edit: I thought about this in a little more depth, and I'll bid 1 to remove all the lead penalties from partner. I have no other reason for bidding 1 really, but the UI penalties are nullified when I bid 1 now.

I'll try 3S, and remember to write on my forehead "DON'T BID OUT OF TURN"

you can't read it there :).

As long as I know the penalty is partner must pass only for the first round of the bidding, and I havean easy 1 overcall to make everything normal.

Any 2 bidder worried about later UI from partner knowing you are too good for your bid?

I guess there are some implications of this (I didn't think of it when I said I'd bid 2), but there are also implications for overcalling anyway (partner knows we have a very very sound overcall). Anyway it is authorized information to everyone that partner is barred, so everyone knows that I could be bidding 2 on a wide variety of hands.

Are we supposed to say no when we are not or should we just not answer? Not completely clear the way you phrased your question.

I don't mean it sarcastically, it was genuinely the reason I didn't bid 2, which I think bridgewise is more effective than 1.

Sure partner also knows the 1 overcall is sound, but at least we are in range for it, we are totally outside the range for 2. So that's a big difference to me.

This is true when it was RHO's opening bid.

If it is LHO or partner to open, then your partner is barred for the entire auction.

JDonn, I don't think this is UI anymore. Everyone saw you opened out of turn, the penalties are already in place. Partner is barred. He is still going to lead a spade, so you might as well make it difficult for the opponents.

Well it obviously doesn't matter on opening lead. I was talking about it with Clee last night, he convinced me the UI would be duplicated by the AI that partner is barred so our bid could be anything, but of course that still doesn't allow him to later take advantage of it.

Write it on partner's forehead instead. It will be easier to see. :P

My partners will wash the message off :(. At least I'll remember I wrote it on. In the worst case scenario, I don't think the laws say anything about using a mirror :P
