Team Tournaments

Recommended Posts

I am almost certain this question has been asked before, but I can't find anything about it on the messageboard.

Is BBO-management thinking about creating the possibility for TDs to organize a team-of-4 tournament (with more then 2 teams as can be done now)? I am sure many people will like it. Swiss movement will be the best I guess. I don't know much about computer-programming, but I can imagine it will be a hell of a job.

I don't think it would be too difficult to program, no more so than, say, any other new movement.

I don't think there is much interest in this sort of movement. Is there ?

hi

i hope i once can ask u uday to create this for junior flight purposse, shoud mean we have large nations teams willing to play against one and other, dont see it beeing used frequently elsewhere(sometimes hard to find 8 playres for a teammatch well not these days anymore with the tourneybarred players

Well, I have asked several times for this, both as imp events and as Board a match events. I could find the links. I think more people would be interested that you might think.... but maybe not. I for one would prefer to play in such events.

This can be very interesting, if you add the match sectioning suggestion from other thread, add some organizational issues (like team management, a IMP->VP table, a round-robin and maybe a no playblacks swiss), and a KO format.

That would be pretty much more work, though.

If it’s easy, then go for it! B) I don’t know how the rest of the world feels, but in my country (The Netherlands; although a small country, containing the second largest bridgepopulation in the world behind the USA, as I am told) teamcompetitions and –tournaments are much more popular than pairs-events.

I think that’s because you cannot pre-announce a teammatch. You need to advertise in the lobby and will most of the time depend on people who are currently not playing in a tournament or at a table. Usually it takes about 10 minutes to find 7 other people, and by the time you found the 7th the first onces you recruted became impatient and joined an other event. It happened to me several times. I believe much more players will be interested in playing teammatches/tournaments when they are displayed in the tournament-list.

And don’t forget to adjust the partnership-desk. I think it’s essential that players can choose their own teammates. Gerardo’s suggestions are very useful, but since Uday seems to have doubts about teamtournaments maybe he can start with Swiss-movement only and expand the possibilities when these tournaments are a success.

The Italian players also like a lot to play to teams tourney and for a while I am looking for the solution to organize that using the teams match (already fact a test for twice)

I have also prepared a. lin with the rule that I have sent to the players that I knew parties.

my difficulties have been:

time for a tournament to teams interesting it is necessary to serve at least 4 round as 6 hands (24 boards) 3h and a half lasted

teams any problem if the team has been formed from friends, some player without partner or without other couple they has asked me to fill the team, I have done him but in this second case the captain has not shown a lot of sense of responsibility the disconnected players they have created difficulty (someone is enrolled but they could not stay for the whole time) I have had to look for sub not to let all the other players to also wait.

registration in the lin that I have prepared is clearly in demand to form the team, to send to me a mail with the recording that points out nick of the players (4/6) captain and responsibility of the captain, the players that are enrolled with email have been 1 team, all the other have asked to participate after the tournament starts. The rudeness is difficult to resolve, but I thinks that if there pits an easier way to let the players to perhaps register there would not be this problem, to the moment however I have not found him yet.

This mine "small" experience I love a lot the tournaments to teams (Danish formula or "girone all'italiana") for which won't allow to lose the project, but I have reached the point that only further tests can say me what the best way and, to the moment, my job not me from a lot of time.

I hope to be able to have soon a few days of vacation to be able to still make test, thanks of the suggestions that you will give me

Have a nice day

The good thing about real life sessions is that they are long enough to much more accurately reflect how people are playing on that particular day compared to these short tournaments so prevalent on BBO. If you wanted to do a team swiss, I fear that the rounds would be so short that the results wouldn't mean much. The converse is 7 or 8 matches of 7 or 8 boards each. However, are we going to get people to sign up for a 6 hour event? Highly doubtful.

What might be interesting is an automated ladder where people who play frequently could sign up for a team and if 4+ members of that team are on-line at any time then they can challenge some other team also online right then. I don't know...forming teams is still too difficult right now. If you were to add something like this to BBO perhaps an additional button similar to the partnership desk like a teammembership desk where pairs can find each other to form a team. Just some crazy thoughts but I like the idea of a continuous event rather than one that begins and end. It is team based and the teams can join or leave at will.

Already in passed Polish player have tried a tournament to teams in which the meetings were organized among the captains of the teams and then the results communicated to the organization, everything in 10 weeks around, I don't know how is ended, I know that the few enrolled Italian teams are withdrawn, my idea is a tournament with Danish formula that begins and it ends in the same evening (to the club we often make tournament to teams in an evening... 4 turns from 6 hands) at least this formula the Italian players it seems to interest. :)
