jdonn
You should play double of preempt - pass - new suit is takeout of the original suit and that bidding the response-suit is natural. So on this hand you can overcall 3♠, and if it were a bit better you could double then bid spades. It's also possible to play double of the suit response to a preempt shows the suit, but I do not prefer that at all. The way I see it, if they hadn't psyched they would have raised their partner anyway and you would have still had to bid at least 3♠. So why give up a takeout double just to gain something you would never have had anyway? Doubling to show the suit also gets you in worse trouble if you have misjudged and they weren't psyching, since if double were takeout you have fair odds to survive in a minor. True overcalling the suit would also be terrible if you are wrong, but you will need a better hand and suit to do it anwyay which gives more protection and increases the odds they were psyching. Phil
3♠. This is a tougher problem if we had five spades.
