A couple of months ago I had the following hand:

A

AKQxx

Axxx

Qxx

The bidding went

1C - (3S) - Dbl - (p)

3NT - (p) - ??

Do you agree with my double? What would you do now? If you make a forcing bid then it would be nice if you could hint at what you will do after partner's most expected calls.

Yes, I agree with double. I can't think of any forcing bids that I might want to make at this stage, so I'll bid a non-forcing 4NT. With a singleton ace in their suit, lack of spots and mediocre club fit, I think this is enough.

I agree with the double, and now I would bid 4NT. I think 4 overstates my clubs by a lot, and the hand is not quite good enough to force to slam.

I think 5NT is the only other call which has merit, after which I'll pass anything partner bids. Honestly I think it is quite close between the two, good problem.

4.

If partner does not have a heart fit, then we have a club fit. I suppose we might have a diamond fit if partner opens clubs with 44 in the minors. But, we have a fit. I need to find it, IMO. 4 demands that he bid something.

If he bids 4NT, I'm bidding 5.

I do think it is good enough to force slam. I don't know that it will make, but I'm not slicing this potato any thinner.

I would have doubled, and would bid 5NT now. Hopefully if partner bids 6NT and does not have the spade king, RHO will not be willing to lead a spade on the auction.

In most of my partnerships opening the bidding shows something though, perhaps I am biased.

I would force to slam. I don't think I'm worth forcing to slam in notrump, but I think there are very good odds of a club fit and we might have a heart fit too. I'll try 5NT and pass whatever partner chooses (please no sarcastic comments about 6).

I mean is partner supposed to bid 7 over 4NT with QJx xx xx AKxxxx, assuming that's even an opener?

Our dbl showed shortness in so partners 3NT is promising 1.5 - 2 stopper sitting under the 3 bidder. Those values are wasted / missing in a suit based slam.

I don't think that partner knows that we have 5. So he might have in a serious bidding problem.

But even holding something like [hv=d=w&w=skqthxxxdkjxcajxx&e=sahakqxxdaxxxcqxx]266|100|

1 - (3) - Dbl - (p)

3NT - (p) - ??

[/hv]

6NT does not look bad.

So I'll join the 5NT crowd.
