Plan the play to make 3nt

Recommended Posts

Play a club towards the jack, and:

- If J loses to West's ace, I know that he doesn't have A, so I can set up two heart tricks without letting West in.

- If East rises with A to play another spade, I'm going to play West for A. I cash the clubs and then decide what to do. If I think diamonds are breaking, I cash them. If I think East has four diamonds, finesse 10. If I think West has four diamonds, he will have been squeezed out of two spade winners and forced to bare A, so I exit with a low heart. (In real life, it will probably turn out that West had QJ10xxx Qxx xxx x and I've gone down in a cold one.)

There's one extra chance: if I play for diamonds 3-3 and find out that East has four, I can exit with the last diamond, hoping that east started with A after all.

- If J holds, try to guess where the ace is. If I think East has A, play a heart to the king, then revert to clubs. If I think West has A, play more clubs.
